Sailing, partying, dancing, cooking, and sometimes pushing the limits. This sailboat had been neglected for some time when she was purchased. Lots of cleaning, sanding, refinishing, new lines, refrigerator, pumps, water heater parts, whole boat water filters, bow thruster, lighting, fuel filters, instruments, air conditioning, etc.... Some of the fun with refitting a sailboat is to be able to do economical but quality improvements. Elbow grease saves a lot of money, watching for sales, knowing when substitutions can be made that will last, and of course enjoying the final product. We sail, fish (haha), dance, fly the drone, sometimes wear bikinis, DIY, ride the motorcycle, listen to great music, and enjoy life. Older sailors don't have a clew when to quit; they just keep lubing their winches. Went to Fantasy Fest 2024. Had a blast. Attended a topless pool party. Ran into some viewers. Danced EDM, hip-hop, and some salsa. Saw some Dr. Seuss artwork, some great body painting, and lots of ....... Constructed some hatch covers out of waterproof PVC board. We really like them from an aesthetic and functionality perspective. Yes we had a few birds and Karen laid around the deck in her bikini sometimes showing her big bug bite (or was it?). After many rainy days it was time to enjoy a day at the beach. We are beach bums. Using the dinghy and a HawkEye hand held depth sounder, Karen measures the depths around the boat. Steve uses the GoPro to check out the bottom of Isabella and the dinghy. Investigated a supposed shipwreck where birds like to hang out. Hung out, so to speak, at the Garden of Eden again. You can certainly get an all over tan there. Rebuilt the fresh water distribution manifold to increase functionality and aesthetics. Added valves to it so that a single circuit can be shut off while keeping the water flowing to the rest of the boat. Of course we danced. They run them fast and hard. Went to the Turtle hospital and the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon. Installed a new Scandvik faucet in the forward shower and corrected some issues from a previous owner. Painted the aft shower stall, smelled the basil and other things, made a pizza but did not invite the iguana for dinner, and of course danced. Tossed some lines to a 105' Feadship built in the 60's and photographed the super moon. It has brought only tropical storms our way and we’re getting ready for another one due to Hurricane Milton. The sustained winds were between 25 and 30 knots with wind gusts up to 50 knots. It made for a rockin’ and rollin’ night. Karen did some routine things like filling our 280 gallon fresh water tank. The refitted Em-Trak AIS unit works. It’s installed, connected to our NMEA 2K network and is displayed on our Garmin chart plotter. Unfortunately, Steve had to drill a hole in the African Mahony for the wires. We took some time to relax and visited the USCG vessel, Samuel D. Ingham which is docked in Key West. She is a 100-meter steel vessel and the most decorated Coast Guard ship in history. The Florida Keys are where we have lived the longest on Isabella; it’s probably time to move on. Reflecting on our favorite aspects of the area, birds, roosters and the Offshore Grand Prix races are among the top of the list. From manatees to pelicans to peacocks and more. Our mini vacation took us back to our old stomping ground, Cape Canaveral. Walking on Cocoa Beach brought back many fond memories. Luckily there was a rocket launch, absolutely love those! We saw dolphins swimming in the channel and so much more. Next stop St. Augustine, the oldest US city and fort Castillo de San Marcos. Volunteers reenacted the firing of the cannon shooting a six pound cannon ball. Super exciting. Back on Isabella, we were lucky to have our friend visit for a short while. The basil we planted in the previous episode is growing well. Karen does some yoga on deck and painted the settee in the cockpit. And of course we danced. This gave us some time to tweak a few things on Isabella. Steve solved the mystery of the auto pilot not working. It was a network issue and once the old Actisense converter was disconnected, the auto pilot recognized all other instruments and is now fully functional. We added a single 118 dB horn. Installed the new fuel gauge below which also sends a signal to the fuel gauge in the cockpit. They both work now. We were running low on provisions (mainly coffee and wine) so launched the dingy to go into town. The outboard motor stopped working and Steve had to row us back to the boat. The inner lining of the fuel hose had collapsed which prevented fuel flowing to the outboard. That’s been replaced and provisions restocked. Luckily there wasn’t too much water in the fuel filter. Steve filtered out the water and added some fuel additive. Waiting for the holiday to be over and a weather window to continue our cruise. Wishing you all a very happy and safe holiday season! Life on a sailboat is a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. This time on Sailing Intermission we repair and paint some areas on the deck. The aft shower stall needed some repair. Our AIS unit was shipped to Em-trak since they stated that the work would be covered under warranty. After receiving and diagnosing the unit, Em-trak refused to cover the repairs under warranty. We are so very disappointed in their customer service. Looks like we’ll be shopping for a new AIS unit of a different brand. We have to remove all bedding, cushions to access and clean every three days. Big hassle. What started as a single antenna replacement has blossomed into installing two new antennas and coax. The hardest part is usually routing the new cables. Our Em-Trak B923 AIS has been shipped to the United Kingdom for repair. Hired someone to go up the mizzen mast to replace one antenna. Karen sanded a bit of teak toe rail where the fenders had rubbed. She then used Sikkens Cetol for touchup. Had some fun in the woods. Saw some wildlife. Our favorite sighting though was a stingray in the Atlantic. Deciding on what dresses to get rid of. Of course dancing. It really cleaned up that area in the engine room and will make it easy to shut off each individual circuit. There are two AIS units on Isabella. One is a built-in receiver on our Icom VHF radio, and the other is the Em-trak AIS transceiver unit which is giving us quite a bit of trouble. The Em-trak was plugged into the NMEA 2000 network and for whatever reason, it wasn't displaying on the Garmin chart plotter. In addition, it is receiving information but doesn’t appear to be transmitting. Isabella's AIS signal is not received on either the ICOM VHF or the Em-trak. The VHF antenna case was cracked, old and ugly so we replaced it the a new 4200 Shakespeare antenna. It won’t solve our AIS issue, but it looks a lot nicer and will give us better receiving capabilities. Recovering from several days of being affected by a cold, we felt good enough to go to the beach for some fresh air and dancing. We’re feeling so much better, yea! Even did some boat gardening. We planted some basil seeds and bought a new mother-in-law tongue (Dracaena trifasciata) plant. It seems a little backwards. We've been in the Florida Keys for quite some time and needed a change. Before leaving we checked out systems, safety gear, and more. Smooth sailing north and decided to stop at Ft. Lauderdale for some additional fuel and us. Gotta love those bascule bridges. We hate going under 65’ fixed bridges since we have a 63’ air draft. Leaving Ft. Lauderdale we had great cruising and then hit some weather. We decided to duck in and found a very nice anchorage. The bottom has great holding and we are well hooked with our 121 pound Rocna anchor. Our Lofrans Falkon windlass is definitely up to the task maneuvering that size of an anchor. We have 200 feet of 1/2 inch chain and the Rocna handles the currents and occasional swells without a problem. Our plants are enjoying sun time in the cock pit. Once anchored we charged our batteries with 1000 watts of solar and 400 watts of wind generator. We also have a Northern Lights 5 kw generator for backup. Thanks for viewing. Ep150 Description: Em-Trak, stripper, bikini, beach, Key West, barnacles, dinghy, topless Good news! Em-Trak decided to replace our B923 AIS unit for free. Went to Key West to party on the beach and on Duval Street. Places included Jimmy Buffett's old hang out and the somewhat famous Sloppy Joes, the Red Garter Saloon where the strippers are but they also play some good music that we dance to. We also went to Smathers Beach which is two miles long. Worked on our rear A/C getting rid of the barnacles which had accumulated in the coils. Had one of those Florida popup storms. Lots of rain and wind. Took a fast dinghy ride at 80mph, haha. But seriously it does scoot pretty well with a 15HP Mercury outboard. Hoping others who have suffered through Helene’s wrath can recover soon. Such sad stories and such a catastrophic storm. It seems like we are always doing refitting on the boat. We measured the mizzen mast height from the deck. Discovered our wind transducer was malfunctioning. After running through some diagnostic tests, it was determined that the transducer and not the display unit was the culprit. Looks like we have another upcoming purchase.
