Even in areas with more natural rainfall, making sure your plants get the right amount of water can be tricky. Let's talk about one of the fundamentals of gardening: WATERING! Properly watering can be tricky. This gets even more complicated in drier climates, so we're going to cover all sorts of factors to know! Naturally, many gardens lack enough compost and mulch. This help retain moisture. The best way to check this? Get your hands dirty! A soil probe will provide you with a sample of your soil and how moist your soil is. When you add compost to your garden, it will be hydrophobic at first. That means you will want to water it deeply and slowly before you even plant in it. That leads right into HOW you are watering. I'm a big fan of irrigation. It's pretty much impossible to hand water sufficiently for a sizable garden! Automated irrigation takes the labor out of the equation for you. I recommend finding what works for you and your garden by experimenting. I run my water for 20 minutes three times per week, but that might be too much or too little for you. Another factor to consider is WHERE you are growing. Inground beds will retain moisture a lot more than raised beds or pots. Mulch will help a lot here! You will likely need to water more than you think, and pre-saturating it will help too. What about adjusting for the seasons? Well, other parts of the country get more rain, so we are still running our irrigation just the same as we did during the summer. When we do get rain, we'll skip some days accordingly.
