If you did Bachelors from a low tier college and if you can do MTech from IIT/NIT/BITs (that means doing very very well in GATE), it will increase your employability and can give you access to top tier of employers in India. But otherwise, MTech does not give you much incremental advantage in terms of education and placements. Just to give you a perspective on how competitive GATE is, IITs offered 700 seats in Computer Science for MTech in 2020. There are 10,000 seats for MTech in good colleges when 7.5 lac+ people appear for GATE every year. So, 98.5% of the candidates appearing for GATE will end up not meeting the cut off. Instead, MS applications are much more holistic and acceptance rates are much better. Of course, you need to spend more for applications and education abroad. So, these are the trade offs. I was one of the first girls to get such a job offer in my family and I was already considered a success. But I wanted more and I thought I could do it. Biggest thing - my father believed in me and encouraged me to to not settle for normal things. So I took my chances and applied for MS in USA and guess what, I got into UIUC (worlds 5th best CS program) 🌟 Btw, I was first person in my family that time to take an international flight (it wasn’t easy) ✈️🥲 For those who are new here: I did my MS for free in UIUC and dropped out of MBA at NYU. I have worked on Wall Street and been mentoring study abroad aspirants in India, Asia, Middle East and US for more than a decade. Doing this for fun and positive energy 🤩 The fee for UIUC when I was going there was around ₹50 lakh. But I received a RAship (Research Assistantship) offer which paid me a stipend worth roughly $10,500 per sem. In my days, dollar was only ₹50. So, this stipend came out to ₹20 lakh for 2 years. Plus, they waived my full tuition fee. In effect, I received ₹70 lakh worth of aid from UIUC to do my MS from there. Btw, at todays rate, this is a whopping ₹1cr+ worth of financial aid 🤑 As I graduated from MS, I got ONE of the highest packages in my batch ie $100K. Plz note that $100k sounds normal right now but 15 yrs ago, it was a big deal 😇 From ₹3lakh in 🇮🇳 to ₹1 crore in aid and ₹70lakh job in 🇺🇸, I got a phenomenal deal. I was a good student in a mediocre college in India (no IIT etc). If you believe in yourself and are willing to put in the work, there’s no limit to what you can achieve either. So, I just want to say this - go for what you believe in.
