Transcript: "One of the reasons that we were able to risk, really, in the early days particularly, and I think it is still true today in semiconductors, only one company solved each problem. Because they went to the Wagon Wheel after work. They got drunk and they bragged about it. They told everybody. So, that one was solved for everybody in the area. So, very quickly, as a problem arise in semiconductors, it was resolved, because all these companies were working on it. And, when one of them found the answer, they all stopped working on it. They all did that, and they went to the next one. And, so, it was an incredible growth. That's why it out-distanced the East Coast, because you didn't find that on the East Coast. They didn't have this energy. This guys were all competitors and they fought like hell, but they all drank together, and they were all young and they all liked to brag about what they were doing. In many cases, they just exchanged information, because they felt it was better to get the damn problem behind them, get some help, and then when they got help, they gave help the next time." Bill Hewlett's name?" Transcript: "I have some stories about twenty some, thirty years ago in the valley that when I did my thesis at Berkeley I ended up with ten to twenty patents that were in a new phenomenon and one thing I did was go to Hewlett-Packard and see if they would like to buy them. So Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard were still very active in that so in that kind of research so they’d said yes. They’d buy a package of them from me and Bill Hewlett explained to me a whole bunch about the business activity. And Dave Packard while I was talking to him I said, “One thing I was worried about is I’m going to keep on inventing and I haven’t even got it all tied down yet. And so the package that’s there isn’t all that’s here in my head.” He says, “Well, I tell you. I’ll make you a deal. For the first six months everything you can write down will be yours part of that deal and after that they’re ours.” Very pragmatic. He won me over right then. But the funny part of that was as I was leaving I was talking to the research director and said, “ I’m assuming that Hewlett-Packard will go into digital techniques for their instrumentation and likely in digital processing on the computers.” “Not a chance.” So that whole thing fell through right then. I wondered if you could run through the steps in the development of your technology, in kind of a rapid sequence, perhaps going back to PARC." Transcript (partial): ". . . Yeah, and when we decided to leave XEROX, we looked at opportunities to take a comparable kind of technology and apply it out in the external world to where we saw the opportunity for personal workstations and personal computers. As we looked at the work we had done at PARC, in order to be successful at printing, the one area that we really had never broken through on was how you handle high-quality typography. Conventional wisdom in the late '70s and early '80s was that the only way you could get a bit-map representation of a character to really look good was to hand tune it very carefully for the particular printing process. Well, if you think through the thousands of typefaces and literally tens to hundreds of thousands of characters, particularly in languages like Japanese and Chinese, it would have been totally unrealistic if we hadn't found a solution to how you could represent, in one single mathematical description, the shape of a character so that it could be rendered on any of the devices, whether they're printers or displays. And it was really that breakthrough as part of our development at Adobe that distinguished what we had done and began the foundation of building that market." Transcript: ". . . My daughter is an art history major getting her Ph.D. in Renaissance art of all things. So I gave her a call just to kind of talk about this. What does the Renaissance mean to you and how would you see it applying to Silicon Valley? But the whole phenomenon of the Renaissance was one of recovering from the Dark Ages and going back to a lot of classics whether it was in the art or in the sciences. And then an intense era of learning, discovery, free-thinking, tying back to those classic principles and the period. The amount of advancement that took place during that was just incredible whether it was in art, whether it was in sculpture, whether it was in architecture. Architecture was one of the main focus points. Science, of course, and I was trying to draw a parallel with her and thinking about Silicon Valley. And the thing is that it's really what’s going on here. We didn’t have a Dark Ages as I would describe it in the 19th century by any means. But what’s gone on in the electronics and in the people here are very much in my mind what must have gone on with the sculptors, the artists, the architects, the scientists. Just a whole new world opening up every day because of the free-thinking and the amount of learning that would take place in a given day would lead to a whole new set of learning the next day, and a whole new set of progress the following day. And so what must have gone on in that period must be very, very similar to what’s going on now. And the impact that it had on the world at that time was enormous in terms of cultural integration and communication. And the impact of what electronics is having on the world today is incredibly profound. The power of people to know what’s going on and understanding — communicate with each other around the world — really breaks down cultural barriers that were impossible to do because of distance, time, and language. And the ability to solve problems mathematically, whether it’s a business problem or analyze whether it’s a business problem. Or a scientific problem, do it as rapidly as we do today and to share that information as real-time as we do today, is going to have, has had, and will continue to have an enormous profound impact. It’s probably the funnest time in my life right now to see the rate of change going on and I only wish that I could be around fifty years from now to see what the impact will be because it’s going to be incredibly profound." Transcript (partial): ". . . Every generation thinks they invented sex and they can’t conceive that all of those old people and their grandparents and their great-grandparents ever were into sex. So, in a similar fashion, there is something going on in technology. We all think that the technology that is new to us is bigger and more transformational than all of the technology that happened before. We can’t really make the judgment objectively because we know what we are struggling with and we don’t know what another generation struggled with and how much impact it had to it. But the concept of making a transatlantic phone call some number of decades ago had to have had at least as big an impact on the people as sending an email message today or accessing a web page. So, I kind of look at technology as a river. The raft is in the river and there are slower parts in the river, but the river just keeps going down and technology keeps flowing and some parts of technology do faster, but then they slow down again. This is a faster period. But I wouldn’t characterize it as being a historically fastest because I didn’t live the other period of times and I don’t think our generation has invented technology." Carol Dweck 2008 Interview Interview date: September 4, 2008 Interviewer: John McLaughlin, Historian and President of the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association Interviewer's question: "One thing that they (founders) all seem to have in common. Actually, there's two things. One thing is, they're not afraid to fail. Failure is just not a big deal. It's just part of life. And then the other is that most of them had an event in their life where somebody died. There was something that changed their direction. They may have said, "I'm not going to work for this guy. I've always wanted to own my own company, so I'm going to do it." That's been the main difference between founders versus the guy who got to be CEO by politics. Because the CEO who isn't the founder is very risk-adverse. He's afraid to make a mistake. How does that relate to this?" Transcript (partial): ". . . Silicon Valley founders are not afraid to fail. That is a key characteristic of the growth mindset. In fact, they say when they fail, they're learning to succeed. They're gaining the experience that they need for their ultimate success. In a fixed mindset, failure means you're not a genius. Failure means there's something wrong with you. It's humiliating. It's to be swept aside as soon as possible. That attitude really curtails your success in the long run. How can people change from a fixed to a growth mindset? In my book, incidentally called "Mindset," I have a chapter on how people can take those first steps towards change, but I also have a chart that juxtaposes the different characteristics of the two mindsets. And I suggest that people Xerox the chart, blow it up and paste it on their mirror because in the fixed mindset, it's about looking smart - always documenting that you've got the goods. But in the growth mindset, it's about capitalizing on what you have growing it and learning. Mistakes made in fixed mindset, you don't have it, and you've got to cover them up. But mistakes in a growth mindset, they're just vehicles for learning. Effort in a fixed mindset means, "Well, you must not be a genius if you really have to sweat." But in the growth mindset, it is the way to develop your abilities and reach success. In a fixed mindset, other people's successes are undermining. But in a growth mindset, they're inspiring, and they're people you can learn from. So step by step by step, people need to keep them in front of them and catch themselves when they're falling into that limiting mixed mindset." Transcript: "You know we’ve talked about disruptive innovation here a lot. And for us, disruptive innovation means we have to take risks. We take risks as a company. We take risks as individuals. As individuals we want to encourage people to stand up at a meeting and say, “Hold it. I know it’s been done this way for 100 years. I’ve got this new idea and you’re going to think that I’m crazy. Those are the ones I want! We want to encourage customers that we have to tell us what their problems are. I think like, Steve Jobs at Apple, we don’t anticipate the customer’s going to tell us the product that they want. They’re going to tell us the slew of problems that they have. And then we can come up with the products that they want. Obviously, from a disruptive innovation standpoint, Steve Jobs is the epitome of it. And Steve is the epitome of it because he got fired for being too innovative and they brought him back and he was still too innovative and it just turned out he was right. He was right all along and they should have listened to him, but it was so innovative that it was disruptive, actually to the organization. And finally he came back with a nearly bankrupt company and now it didn’t matter how disruptive you were to the organization and you know, he might be the gentlest, kindest manager – and it just doesn’t matter. He’s right 75-80 percent of the time and when he’s right, he’s right big. The iPad is an amazing, you know 22 million sold or whatever it is already. So you have to think that’s a once in a lifetime find of a person that is so disruptive and got to be back in a place where they’d let him be that disruptive regardless of what was going on in the organization." Transcript: ". . . One of the things that's the most striking about Silicon Valley is the way that it's grown geographically. When I started to study Silicon Valley in the late 1970s, it was easy to say that Silicon Valley was Santa Clara County — sort of from Palo Alto to San Jose, with Stanford in the north and San Jose in the south. Today Silicon Valley has spilled over geographically. It's spilled out to the south in Santa Cruz County. It's spilled to the north in San Mateo County, and it's spilled to the east in Alameda County. And it will continue to grow. This is a challenge for academics. Those of us that try to study the regional economy are completely daunted by the problem of where does the region end. I think in 15 to 20 years, the region will have extended to up . . . some people would argue that parts of Silicon Valley are now in San Francisco with the software industry in Berkeley or in Marin County, a lot of multimedia activity. I think that the geographic boundaries will continue to expand as the region continues to flourish, as the regional economy continues to flourish." Transcript (partial): "At Intel, Gordon Moore was definitely. I did not report directly to him, but I was kind of three levels below him, and attended many, many meetings with him. And I was really impressed by his humility. Really a humble person. Very smart, very gentle, never spoke except when he had something really good to say. Really, really good model of a scientist that … a humble scientist that was very, very good, and always had the big picture, not just the little picture. Andy Grove was a superb manager. Really superb. Most highly disciplined. Could drive you nuts. One time I went in a meeting with Andy, and I said . . . I called the secretary and I said, “I need one hour.” She called back, she said, “Andy will see you for half an hour. He’s going to be in your office at eight.” He showed up at eight. At eight-thirty sharp, he gets up and he goes. And we covered everything in half an hour, of course. Because he made, yes. So, but he was the guy that was . . . we have something good to conserve here. Andy was the guy that said, “We’ll be the last one in Silicon Valley to turn the lights off.” But he was also the guy that had the discipline to get Intel out of the RAM and out of basically all memory, so that they could focus on microprocessors. And that was the most brilliant call that I think anybody has made. Very, very gutsy. Very courageous. Really, really courageous. Because microprocessors, at that time, were nothing. Nothing." Transcript (partial): "I think every period in history has its unique features, but I think right now with the computing technology and the telecommunications technology changing so rapidly, I mean, in my lifetime I can look, not even my whole life, half my life, 25 years ago, computers were big, monstrous things. They were just starting to become—the minicomputer age was born about 25 years ago, and the microcomputer age 10 years ago, so we're seeing this incredible momentum toward miniaturization and increased communications power, information processing power, so there's a revolution underway of sorts. A lot of people refer to it as the Information Revolution, or whatever, but it's hard to imagine the compression in time over which this is happening and the improvement in computing power. This 3,000, factor of 3,000 computing power in just, in terms of price and performance, those two factors improving by a factor of 3,000 to 10,000 in 15 years, is just astonishing. What else improves at that rate? What else gets better and at the same time cheaper? It's one of these phenomenon that gets a little bit hard to understand relative to other things, like automobiles. They always get more expensive. They rarely get cheaper. They get better. So it's a phenomenal industry to be involved in."
