A "traveling melody" is a melodic line formed initially by a musician but constantly evolving with creative input from various artists. It is the first time it is performed with the accompaniment of a fiddle, a medieval musical instrument that emerged in 9th-century Europe. The fiddle, the ancestor of most European bowed instruments, derives from the Byzantine lira, which spread widely in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Byzantine lira, in turn, derives from the ancient lyre, creating this way a multi-millennial connection between these two instruments. Calvin is a Canadian folk musician who toured extensively as solo, with various bands and theatre companies in Russia, Europe, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA, and from coast to coast across Canada. Among others, he performed with the Caravan Stage Company, a horse-drawn theatrical troupe, and with the Canadian folk music institution Stringband, fiddling his way from Moose Jaw to Moscow, including performances in Belarus, Boston, and Baker Lake. Since 2004, his love of music and teaching fiddle has taken him to remote First Nations communities in the far north of Canada. He currently lives, teaches, and performs in Victoria, BC. An adventure in which even the gods themselves took part. It can truly be said that the Argonauts, great heroes as they were, are worthy of the great epics of Eastern or Northern literature, parts of a tradition that resulted in modern masterpieces such as The Lord of the Rings. But heroes of legend are only ever as great as the challenges they face. And many challenges did the Argonauts encounter, from the crashing stones of the Symplegades, to the never-sleeping dragon guarding the Golden Fleece, to the six-armed giants called Gegenees. And all these challenges they conquered, with the strength of their arms and the sharpness of their wit. But what awaited for them was an enemy that could not be beaten by either. Part beautiful women and part birds, perched atop their rocky islands, the Sirens waited patiently for the doomed sailors to pass by in their ships. Then, they sang and played their flute and lyre, with voices so sweet that sailors would abandon their thoughts of home and only think of listening to that soothing song forever. And the Sirens would keep singing mercilessly, as the sailors would throw themselves into the sea and wreck their ships on the rocky shores, wishing only to keep hearing their sweet song. And thus, when the Argo passed by, the Sirens raised their voices in song, and the Argonauts forgot home and goal, turning the ship around. All but one. For Orpheus picked up his own lyre and raised his divine voice in song as well. And he sang of a quarrel between the godly brothers, Poseidon and Zeus. And so beautiful was his song, so sweet his voice, so masterful his playing, that it drowned out the voices of the Sirens, their own song now seemingly unskillful, their voices coarse in comparison. The flute fell from their lips, the lyre slipped from their fingers, as Orpheus played and sang. And free from their spell thanks to his music, the Argonauts passed the island of the Sirens, who were destined to die and turn to rocks, if they were ever bested in song. And so, godly Orpheus proved his mastery, saving his ship and its crew. All but one, who threw himself into the sea before Orpheus could pick up his lyre. But the gods took pity on him, it is said, and carried him away to safety and into Aphrodite’s embrace. Additionally, in the 8th century BC, the Epidaurus sanctuary became associated with the cult of Apollo. Nikolaos Koumartzis, Ph.D., is the visionary behind many cultural endeavors with international recognition, including LUTHIEROS Music Instruments and SEIKILO Music Channel. He holds a Ph.D. in Journalism from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, an MSc in Publishing from the University of the Arts London, a Ma in Strategic Product Design from the International Hellenic University, and a Ba in Computer Science from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He is the author of six personal books, co-author of dozens more, and the lead author of papers on the topic (among others) of ancient Greek musical instruments. As a natural consequence, in 2009, he co-founded a series of publishing houses in Greece (iWrite Publications, Pigi Publications, and Daidaleos Publications), where he served as the Art Director until 2019. Do you see that bright star? Yes, that one. That is Vega. It belongs to the constellation of Lyra. How did the constellation get its name? Come, I shall tell you a story—a story of another time, a story about a man and his love and his lyre. It was a time of despair. Orpheus, the greatest singer of all time, whose lyre had calmed heroes and beasts and whose music had conquered even the man-eating Sirens, had returned to his native Thrace. And there, next to the great river Hebrus, he lamented. For his greatest feat and his most beautiful song, the most beautiful song of all time, had been in vain. Yes, he had charmed Hades himself. He had convinced the ruler of the dead to do what had never been done and let his beloved Eurydice return to the sunlit lands of the living. And then, in one moment... all was gone! All in vain! And then he heard the sound of cymbals, roars, drums, and wild flutes. The followers of Dionysus, the feral Maenads, surrounded him, terrible beasts at their side, wine dripping from their lips. “Come with us!” they cried. “Come and feast, drink, and lay with us, and we will make you forget your Eurydice. Come and sing the name of Dionysus!” But Orpheus did not move. “There is no woman for me but Eurydice,” he said. “And though Dionysus is great, I only sing for the god of light, my Apollo.” But the Maenads would not be rejected, would not be denied. And at once, they set their beasts upon him, to attack with tooth, claw, and beak. But Orpheus lifted his lyre and played. And as he sang, the hounds and the vultures stopped their snarling and came to rest at his feet, enchanted by his music. And even the feral Maenads stood and listened, their frenzy forgotten under his music’s spell. But alas, the Maenads were many. And though Orpheus sang with all his might, his voice could not reach them all. They kept screaming and hitting their drums and cymbals until, finally, his voice was drowned, the spell was broken, and they were upon him, women and beasts together, ripping the head off his body and throwing it into the river. And Hebrus, the great river of Thrace, carried the head of his favorite son away upon his lyre so that they could not reach it anymore. It is said that Orpheus’ head kept singing as it was carried away, and the Muses heard it. And they cried and lamented the loss of the greatest of musicians. And Zeus heard their cries, and his heart was in pain. “Do not weep,” said the Father of the Gods. “For he is now reunited with his beloved in the sunless lands. But his music will not be forgotten, as long as the stars shine in the sky”.
