An unexpected sales prompted me to book the flight back in April to review this rather eccentric airline brand. Virgin is known in the industry and beyond for its quirkiness. And my six hours onboard the A350 reflected the prevailing sentiment. The airline's A350 has a solid seat that would ensure a comfortable ride across the Atlantic. However, the same cannot be said if the flight is over 10 hours. Virgin is an interesting airline and certainly a breed of its own in the 21st commercial aviation industry. For the majority, it is worth an occasional ride at a reasonable price point. But other than that, I am sure there are better alternatives in terms of F&B, seat, loyalty program. Having flown some of the top carriers from the middle east, I did not expect Gulf Air to compete among the top echelon given its fleet size and limited network. However, my experience flying onboard two long-hauls with Gulf Air did not meet my most basic expectations. Aside from safety negligence, the catering onboard a 10 hours flight is simply unacceptable for an international business class product. The only aspect that shines from my Gulf Air experience is the Apex Suite hard product that still offers unparalleled privacy and comfort. This second tier middle eastern airline inherited the region’s upscale approach to commercial aviation but not in a flamboyant way akin to some of its neighbours. My 6 hours journey from Bangkok to Muscat on Oman Air 787’s first class involved a multi-course dinner with champagne and burgundy inside a fully enclosed suite. The dreamliner is Oman Air’s latest aircraft and it will take over the carrier’s A330 as the only long haul aircraft in the near future. The hospitality from the crew was the highlight of the flight. I was genuinely impressed by the crew’s unrelenting effort to continue meal service during period of rough air, and the consistently positive attitude in response to every request. The cockpit crew was so kind that I was invited to visit the cockpit after landing and learnt that one of the pilot also owns a luxury chocolate brand in Oman. Singapore’s daily A380 service between the city pair is undoubtedly the most comfortable way to cross the Atlantic. My Helsinki to Singapore flight had to spend an extra three hours in the air overflying most of Europe before making the east bound journey across Eurasia. Finnair’s ground service in Helsinki suffered palpable decline from an extremely limited lounge operating hour to the closure of most concessions.
