So, taking to my lab (and my usual resources), I was able to conjure up something that I feel really nails the brief. Starting with fabric and bark scratching, I created a low brown noise and layered in some delta waves using my MIDI keyboard. Next, I added healing tones (174Hz and 528Hz) before using the keyboard once again to enhance the sound. To top it off, I created green noise by brushing and shaking our Christmas tree's pine branches and needles (which led to quite the post-Christmas mess!) and running the sounds through the usual filters. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience and capture many of these through my travels. Whether it was hiking through rugged terrain, scuba diving in crystal-clear waters, or even something closer to home, like a caravan trip in the Lake District, each encounter felt special. What’s fascinating is that while these are all essentially just the sound of water, each one carries its own character, a distinct melody that soothes the ears and soul. It was just before Christmas when an unusual chain of events sparked the idea for this soundscape. I was lying in the bath, relaxing as rain pelted against the window outside. Often, I pair my baths with calming sounds - sometimes my own recordings, other times soundscapes I randomly find on YouTube. That day, I happened to be playing an ocean wave video. As I sank deeper into the bath, letting it cover my ears, the sounds from above transformed into something magical. The muffled underwater ambiance blended seamlessly with the rain and the waves. It became a beautiful, layered symphony - a mixture of natural sounds creating a moment of absolute bliss! 😊 That’s when the idea for H₂O Noise was born. I wanted to recreate that auditory experience for others. Initially, I considered including the sounds of a babbling brook, but ultimately, only the smooth, powerful roar of a waterfall could complement the other three sounds. When I added it, the combination felt complete - like the perfect watery wonderland. So, here it is: a soundscape crafted from my own field recordings and holiday videos, designed to bring you the same peace I felt in that moment. Let me introduce you to Dark Chamomile Noise - a carefully crafted soundscape designed to quiet your restless mind, ease anxiety, and guide you into deep, restorative sleep. Chamomile has long been cherished for its natural calming properties, traditionally used to soothe insomnia and promote relaxation. To get to the heart of how to best record the essence of snow falling, I once again turned to the 'online oracle.' Here’s what it suggested: Snowfall's Soft Hiss: A light, continuous hiss that mimics the soft, steady fall of snowflakes, creating a smooth, calming atmosphere. Distant Wind or Breeze: A subtle, cool breeze that gently ebbs and flows, adding a sense of winter air without disrupting calm. Mistletoe can actually be linked to sleep in a few indirect ways. It’s been used in herbal medicine for its calming effects, and its association with peace and comfort can help you relax. Plus, as a winter symbol, it ties into the season when our bodies naturally produce more melatonin, making us feel sleepier. So to create this I thought, rather than just simply take some mistletoe and record the brushing and stroking sounds - I'd distil the essence of it using the online oracle. Here's what was suggested for mistletoe as a sleep noise: Whispering Green: A faint rustling, like mistletoe’s evergreen leaves swaying softly, carrying the spirit of renewal and quiet celebration. Crystal Drift: Airy white noise, like snowflakes settling or the hush of a winter night, reflecting the purity of its white berries. Frosted Harmony: A low, steady hum, echoing the distant winds of winter, embodying mistletoe’s gentle, enduring presence. (*I love the cute but weird subtitles it sometimes gives*) Using this as a guide, I set out to create the three individual sounds in the old sound lab. With sprigs of mistletoe I picked up at my village Christmas market, I recorded the gentle shaking and rustling, then layered that with some undulating fabric scratching sounds to mimic a soft breeze. I added more fabric sounds and rice shaking to bring in the white noise, and finished it off with a subtle 532Hz C tone on the MIDI keyboard to enhance relaxation. This texture-rich sound has always held a special place in my heart - and as mentioned before - gentle fabric scratching was my gateway into ASMR. So, being able to craft my own version now feels incredibly fulfilling! For this project, I worked with a variety of velvets—crushed, panne, and devoré—recording the subtle yet intricate sounds of them being scratched and stroked with my wife's Tangle Teezer. These recordings were then run through my usual suite of filters to bring out the deeper, more resonant tones. To add even more depth, I layered in smooth, blended low-frequency tones created on the keyboard. The final result is a cosy, indulgent mix: soft, undulating high tones paired with rich, grounding low drones. Known for its evergreen leaves and enduring vitality, ivy has long represented healing and rejuvenation. At the same time, it holds a deep connection to the festive winter season, adorning homes and traditions as a timeless emblem of resilience, renewal, and the promise of life even in the coldest months. But how would I be able to turn that into a soothing sound for the mind and body? Well, I took to the online oracle to help point me in the right direction. Well, Serotonin is a chemical in your brain that helps you feel happy and calm. It works by jumping between brain cells, passing signals that say, “Everything’s okay!” So, if there’s enough serotonin, your mood, sleep, and energy stay balanced! Once again, I've tried to capture this concept (or chemical in this case) into a relaxing, indulgent sleep sound. So turning to the AI oracle, I asked it what serotonin would sound like if it were a noise. Here was its response: (Full disclosure - I kept spelling it serAtonin in the video, like melatonin. My dyslexia on full display to the world🤦‍♂️ ) Ocean Waves: Gentle waves rolling in and out, reflecting serotonin's rhythmic flow in balancing relaxation and wakefulness. I felt pretty useless as a husband during labour for our children, but my one role was to help my wife produce oxytocin - through cuddles, making her laugh and keeping her warm, comfortable and safe. Oxytocin, often called the "love hormone," helps reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels, improving mood, and promoting feelings of calm and emotional well-being. Imagine: Rolling Pink Noise: Smooth, warm textures that flow like a steady, comforting breath, soft and expansive, mirroring the tranquil sensation of being cradled in stillness. Subtle Natural Sounds: A seamless blend of soft wind and distant waves, rising and falling in gentle harmony—like the soothing presence of a familiar voice or the comfort of someone close by. Gentle, Low-Frequency Hums: Deep, resonant tones that wrap around you, steady and warm, resembling the faint hum of a resting heart or the vibrations felt in a quiet, shared embrace. Slow, Rhythmic Pulses: A heartbeat-like thrum, slow and organic, echoing the synchronized rhythm of peaceful breathing shared between two people in perfect stillness. So, taking these ideas into my sound lab, I used my usual techniques of elongation and filtering to carefully recreate each one, preparing them to blend seamlessly into a final composition. To enrich the soundscape, I added low delta tones and solfeggio healing frequencies generated on my MIDI keyboard. Its rich, velvety warmth soothes your senses, melts away the day's worries, and wraps you in a comforting embrace. Perfect to get you ready for a peaceful night's sleep! That's where I thought Dark Cocoa Noise come in. Similar to a previous video I did last year, Hot Chocolate Noise, only with some major tweaks. Firstly, I've made a much richer, darker, deeper sound. Those sounds most of us prefer to help get us into a deeper sleep. And secondly, I've used the online oracle to better guide me on how to make the perfect Cocoa Noise. Here's what was suggested: ---If Dark Cocoa Noise were a sleep noise, it might combine elements that evoke richness, warmth, and depth, much like the sensation of cocoa itself. Here's how it could sound: Deep, warm tones: A low-frequency brown noise base, resembling the grounding comfort of rich cocoa and the soft scattering of cocoa powder. Smooth white noise: A silky, even-toned noise to mimic the creamy quality of cocoa and white marshmallows on top. Soft bubbling and marshmallow crisping: Gentle bubbling sounds to evoke cocoa simmering, paired with faint marshmallow crisping for a cozy, nostalgic texture.---- So much like before, I started making the Brown Noise combining cocoa powder and the low whir of a Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser. I then edited and filtered that sound and smoothed it into a soothing brown constant. Then using sandsticks and some fabric scratching I was able to create a higher, whiter noise to layer over. I then topped it off with the blended sounds of marshmallows toasting and the cocoa boiling and bubbling in a pan. The result is a warming, soothing audio blend, perfect for listening to right before bed! Rest well tonight friends!
