About halfway to Meeka we stopped into Mt Gould to stretch the legs and have a look. A police station use to be here, with the main building & jail cell still standing. Mt Gould itself is quite impressive too! Well we made it to Meekatharra just in time for Kurt to visit the department of mines and officially get his miners right. This permit means Kurt can legally prospect in certain areas throughout WA. We set ourselves up at the ‘Peace Gorge’ free camp, just out of town. A lovely spot which reminded us a bit of devils marbles. The following day, Kurt caught up on some minor repairs and we headed into Meekatharra to have a look around the sights. The next day, all hitched up we headed down into Cue. Our mate Blaine from Camper Australis who was working in a nearby mine, so we caught up with him at the pub for dinner. We camped at the RV free camp which was literally just one block away from the main street. The next day we looked around Cue at all the old buildings. It was definitely like a step back in time. Big Bell We decided to head west of Cue to check out the old township of Big Bell🛎. A few ruins scattered around, an old windmill and probably the most noticeable bit - the old big bell pub! After a good squizz around, we decided to continue out to see Walga Rock. Walga Rock is like a mini Uluru, it has very similar colourings & curves and is a sight of significance for the Aboriginal people. There is a section of the rock which is filled with aboriginal paintings. We admired the paintings and Walga rock from the ground, before heading off and back into Cue. Once back in Cue, we decided to do one last detour, this time east about 20km to visit Garden Rock. Another unique rock formation, with lots of rock pools up top and a nice view of the surrounds. Well happy with our sight seeing around Cue, we finally hit the road and headed towards Mt Magnet. We camped approximately 10km north of Mt Magnet so we could watch the final origin match. We had pulled off about 1km off the road, were all set up when we looked out and saw a police car. Both me and Kurt paper scissors rocked to see who would go outside and talk to them. Turns out, they were just making sure we were ok. We explained how we were just camped up so we could watch the origin and have a few beers. Turns out one of the officers was a blues supporter #poorfella. Well i think we all know how game 3 ended, it was a close game but i guess NSW have to win occasionally. We had a great nights sleep in our free camp, all refreshed we headed off to check out some nearby sights. Visiting: Lennonvillle Townsite, the cave, amphitheatre and out to the Granites. A small park with clean amenities, communal fire pit, green grass and most importantly only one block away from the pub. All refreshed from a nice hot shower we strolled up to the National Hotel - a lovely cosy pub for a pint & parmy. The following day we drove around and checked out Sandstones local attractions, London Bridge, The Brewery & the old state battery. With the van in tow, we grabbed some fresh milk & veges from the store before heading east towards Leinster. Just over halfway to Leinster we found a ripper camp-spot near some granite formations. London Bridge It was such a good spot, we decided to stay 2 nights. We loved sitting back next to a fire and watching the Granite cliffs change colours, especially around sunset. We then moved up the road into Leinster, for 3 nights. The town itself is purely a mining town with just a pub, grocery store, petrol station and a communal recreation centre. At only $20 a night for power and water plus free washing machines, it was the perfect place to catch up on some work, maintenance and of course washing. One night, we headed to the pub as we were craving another chicken parmy. Wow is all we can say. The food was delicious and such massive servings. You can see why it was full of people. It was nice to relax, a decent shower🚿 and give everything a good clean. It was nice walking along the beach and up along the jetty too. After our 2 night stay, we headed off - eager to see more of the Eyre Peninsula. We left Smoky Bay and headed out to 📍Point Brown for a squiz. At the end of a long dusty road we were welcomed with spectacular cliffs and beaches. Can definitely see why this spot would be good👍🏼 to camp at in the summer! We walked down and saw the popular ‘smoky bay rockpool’. A wee bit cold🥶 for us to even think about going in for a dip. We left Point Brown and headed down and around to Perlubie beach! Now what a beautiful spot this was🏖. We pulled up onto the beach with only one other camper set up. There were numerous beach shelters free, so we thought one night spoil ourselves and have a covered in veranda😉. We spent two glorious night camped up here! At only $10 a night, beach camping & flushing toilets🚽 available, its not hard to see why this spot is so popular with fellow travelers. It was so nice, we even set up the camera and filmed our latest podcast here - ‘then & now’. If you haven’t already, check it out. We’ll pop the link at the bottom of this post 👍🏼 Well after our relax at Perlubie we packed up and set off early, headed into Streaky Bay. We parked up, grabbed a coffee☕️ from the local cafe and walked around the main streets. We so happened to park right across from the local op shop. 💁🏻‍♀️Now we’ve come to love op shops on our trip and tend to pick up great clothes. After browsing for a while, we learnt that it was ‘fill a bag for $3’.🤩 Amz found a genuine RM Williams jacket & Kurt found a near new Industrie jacket. We grabbed a few more surf brand items of clothes and took it to the counter. We probably got items totaling a value of $250+ for a bargain of $3! You beauty👏🏼. All chaffed with our finds we set off to drive the Cape Bauer loop road. We checked out some coastal lookouts🌊, along with some blowholes by the sea. The blowholes were definitely the highlight of the loop, providing a good 10 minutes of entertainment for us big kids😂. We returned to Streaky Bay and decided to top up with some fuel before heading off. As Kurt was filling up⛽️, we noticed the Powerhouse museum was open - right across the road. Considering its only open 2 afternoons a week, we decided to go and check it out! So glad we did, it was amazing to see 100s of engines. Most restored and fully operational😮. While we were there, one of the volunteers started up one of the old engines which was cool. We happily popped our donation in the box, on the way out👍🏼. Leaving Streaky Bay, we headed south. We detoured in and drove the ‘Westall Way Loop’ road. Another great coastal loop with some great vantage points and beaches🏖 to see. We then continued south to Point Labatt, to see the sea-lion colony. A great set up lookout with free binoculars🔭 so you could see the sea lions who were about 100m down laying along the beach & rocks. Well after a busy day of sight seeing😌, we decided to head to Murphys Haystacks and camp for the night. The following morning we wandered around the Haystacks checking out the natural rock formations, which was pretty cool to see. Even though the weather and temperatures🌡 haven’t been the best. We are thoroughly enjoying our time on the Eyre. Next stop; a detour inland to Wudinna & Gawler Ranges😉 </video> <video> EPIC CAMPSITES - RAZORFISH CATCH AND COOK - Kangaroo island ROAD TRIP Part 3 Description: Traveling with DOGS on KI South Australia It doesn’t cost any extra to have your four legged friend come across to KI with you on the ferry, just make sure they know your traveling with a dog when booking your ticket (they list them, on your ticket). The ferry crossing itself is only 45 minutes, so not a long journey. You have 2️⃣ options with your dog on the ferry; - Option 1) they stay secured in your car / van on the deck of the ferry. Its all open aired and you can actually keep an eye on them from the top level. - Option 2) they have a covered area on the top deck, with tables and seating you can sit with your dog. Dog must be on a lead and under control of course. When booking your trip over to KI, the team at SeaLink mentioned that you ring📞 the local KI council and register your dog for the period you’ll be on the island. A completely free service, and is more for the council records. So that if your dog got lost while on the island, they can reunite with their owners. To our surprise, alot of KI is indeed dog friendly, with only two national park areas, that they are not allowed into. There is also a vet & dog sitter on the island, if you require those services for your pooch too!👍🏼 🔹🚢 FERRY tickets & boarding If you want to travel to KI with a caravan, be sure to book ahead. We travelled in ‘off peak’ and were able to secure some dates only 2 weeks out. We have heard it gets VERY busy in peak times, so make sure you lock in🔒 some dates if you intend to travel. The ferry terminal is located at Cape Jervis on the mainland & located at Penneshaw on KI. Both easily signed and user friendly. You simply park up in one of the lanes and then head into the office to ‘check-in’ - which is advised to be, at least 45mins before your departure time. When boarding the ferry, all trailed vehicles are reversed on. As its only a medium sized ferry and is designed with only rear loading ramps. The crew on the ferry are really good and gave us an option of reversing it on ourselves, or you can ask one of the ferry staff to jump in and reverse it for you. Depending how confident you are and how full the ferry is, it can be a tight fit, so your reversing skills have to be good. 😉 🔹⏰ How much TIME to allow on KI We briefly touched on this in our original blog. We spent 13 days and that was ok, but we could of easily spent a month relaxing around the island. Due to the high ferry cost, you want to make the most of your time on the island and give yourself plenty of time to immerse yourself into island life & see all the sights. So grab a map, start looking at what you want to see and try to workout a rough timeframe that would suit you. PLUS we would highly recommend having a few extra days up your sleeve, just incase you get bad weather. 🔹⛽️ FOOD & FUEL Don’t be fooled, Kangaroo island is huge! So make sure you plan ahead and check out where the fuel stations are. The major town on KI is Kingscote, on the north-eastern side. There is a IGA here and also an IGA in Penneshaw (ferry terminal). Far from it, in our opinion We had been looking forward to crossing the Nullarbor for quite some time. It’s one of those things you hear about a lot when planning a trip around Australia🇦🇺. Well after almost a year in WA it was time to start the infamous Nullarbor and head east. Our only plan was to take our time, see the sights and just play it by ear with no timelines. Leaving Norseman, we pulled up at the Balladonia Roadhouse to stretch our legs. There hadn’t been a great deal to see up until here. Not far down the road we came to the start of the ’90 mile straight’ – Australia’s longest straight section of road. We did about 70 miles then called it a day and set up at Baxters Rest area. The following day we packed up and headed off to check out a blowhole and some sinkholes. Good old wikicamps led us to some cracking spots that were not signposted and would have missed if we didn’t see the pinned points of interests. During our side track adventures we saw so much wildlife – kangaroos🦘, shingleback lizards, wedge tailed eagles and more. We even had to slow down for an echidna crossing the Nullarbor, as we were heading to our campsite near Madura.
