Big questions demand big thinking. 💭 The Stockholm School of Economics recently opened its Center for Wellbeing, Welfare and Happiness. The business school now offers all of its students the chance to take part in the Center's courses and lectures, as a way to achieve a more holistic approach to economics studies. 🏛️ The Center's founding idea, in short, is that if we can increase people's wellbeing, society will benefit. Our international student friends at @StudyinSweden have explored libraries in Stockholm, Umeå and Skövde to see what else is on offer. Why not borrow an electric guitar, a tool or a video game? Yes, publicly financed libraries in Sweden can make your everyday life easier. You don't have to spend money on buying things you might only use once or twice – you can just borrow them instead. What a great way to make life more affordable – and greener! </video> <video> Did you know that Sweden's Oscar statuette is a beetle? Description: Did you know that the Swedish equivalent of the Oscar statuette is a beetle – 'Guldbaggen', the rose chafer? 🐞 We visited the workshop where Patrik Sandell makes the Swedish award. Such craftsmanship! 🌟 A Guldbagge Award weighs approximately 1.2 kg and its body is in enamelled copper. As a final touch, the Guldbagge is spray-painted to give it its characteristic shimmer. This year, the Guldbagge Awards Ceremony celebrates 60 years and takes place on Monday 13 January. 🤩 </video> <video> The sound of recycling in Stockholm! Description: Say hello to 'Returrundan' – the mobile recycling station that makes it easier for residents in Stockholm to sort their waste. 🚛🎶 In Sweden, not all types of waste can be disposed of at home. Items like glass, electronics and certain other materials must be taken to a recycling centre. The aim with Returrunda is to make waste sorting more accessible – especially for those without a car, who walk or cycle. And it's more environmentally friendly! The recycling station comes to you rather than everyone having to drive to the recycling station themselves. 🚶‍♂️🚴‍♀️ With a short jingle, the recycling truck announces its presence as it drives around various neighbourhoods. From reusable items to hazardous waste like paint and batteries, Returrundan accepts a wide range of objects and materials – as long as they fit inside a moving box. 📦♻️ The recycling truck then takes people's waste to a recycling centre. Returrundan is an initiative by Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, a water and waste company owned by the City of Stockholm. </video> <video> A Christmas starter kit for Sweden Description: Preparing for Christmas in Sweden? This is a guide to making the most of it: Soft saffron buns: A must-eat during the Swedish Christmas season – sweet wheat pastries flavoured with saffron. Unusual wine – glögg: Spiced wine, which is drunk warm and often with raisins and almonds. There are also non-alcoholic versions. Glögg cups: To avoid gulping it down, glögg is best drunk from customised small glass cups. Glögging not glugging! Crunchy gingerbread biscuits: Christmas staple food. Firewood: A log fire brings extra warmth. Star 1: A small reflector, preferably attached to your coat or jacket so that cars can see you (and people can find each other after 15:00). Star 2: A paper star with an electric light inside, used to decorate windows and boost the Christmas mood. Means of transport: Ice skating to work, anyone? (Admittedly not a common way to commute.) Handy: Warm hands, warm heart! Mittens help fight off the midwinter cold. Candles: An Advent candle is lit every Sunday from now till Christmas. Four candles mean it's Christmas! Tangled lights: Have you also noticed that string lights often find a way to get tangled up between Christmases? Lillebil and her family in south Sweden have made this a reality. Two years ago, tired of seeing fir trees as single-use items, they introduced a green alternative – a Christmas tree rental, with the longevity of the trees in mind. How? By digging up the fir trees rather than cutting them down. Planted in pots, the Christmas trees are rented out over Christmas, after which they returned to keep growing till the next Christmas. Description: Today we celebrate one of the most beloved Swedish traditions – perhaps also one of the most odd-looking. 😍 On 13 December, the traditional Lucia songs can be heard in countless corners of the country – in churches, schools and workplaces. At the heart of it is Lucia, the bearer of light in the Swedish winter darkness. She leads a singing procession of candle-carrying handmaidens and ‘star boys’, all dressed in white gowns. The Lucia celebration also includes gingerbread biscuits and sweet, saffron-flavoured buns shaped like curled-up cats and with raisin eyes. Often served with Swedish mulled wine (‘glögg’) or coffee. Description: Every day, around one million school lunches are served in Sweden, to children between 6 and 19. Swedish law states that schools should serve a nutritious meal for lunch – free of charge. Well, there's no such thing as a free lunch, and in this case it's funded by taxes. The idea is to give children more equal conditions for learning, that no one should go hungry in school.
