There's only one event in Chilean Rodeo and it involves a pair of huasos (Chilean cowboys) herding a calf around a circular arena, or media luna (half moon), by galloping sideways and pushing a calf with the chest of the horse until its pinned against large cushions at the far end of the media luna. Points are awarded based on level of success and technique. In total, we drove 2,413 miles (3,883 km) during April 2024. Here are highlights from our April road trip in Argentina & Uruguay. We started the month in the border town of Posadas, having just entered Argentina from Paraguay. We explored the famous wetlands of Iberá National Park, then we entered Uruguay for the first time, the 19th (of 23 continent-based countries in the Americas) we have visited so far. In total, we drove 1,424 miles (2,292 km) during July 2024. Here are highlights from our April road trip in Argentina & Chile... We started the month in Mendoza, Argentina, and crossed into Chile over the Los Libertadores pass. This was the 100th overland border crossing on our Journey. We explored Chile's Central Coast region including the Lamari Valley, La Sirena, and the Elqui Valley. Then we headed down to the airport in Santiago to take a (rare for us) flight to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) which we explored for 8 days. Upon returning to mainland Chile we drove to Viña del Mar, then back to Santiago where we once again spent a few days before returning back to Argentina once again over the Los Libertadores pass, our 101st border crossing and our 10th time using this border crossing, making it our most frequented border crossing by far. In total, we drove xxxx miles (xxxxx km) during March 2024. Here are highlights from our November 2024 road trip in Argentina and Uruguay. After spending a couple of months in our favorite city in Latin America it was time to hit the road again. We left Buenos Aires and drove to the nearby province of Entre Rios to explore the Jewish Colonies dating back to the 1890's. From the town of Colon, Entre Rios, we crossed into Uruguay with the 102nd border crossing of our Journey. Our first stop in Uruguay was Grutas del Palacio, listed as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Surprisingly, this was the first time we've encountered this designation even though there are apparently 213 of them in 48 different countries. From there we drove down to Colonia de Sacramento, with it's Historic Quarter that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 1 of 3 in Uruguay. After exploring Colonia we visited the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo for the first time. In addition to exploring the city we spent some time in the surrounding areas visiting wineries and another of Uruguay's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Cristo Obrero Church in Atlántida which is an architectural landmark designed in 1958 by the Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste. From Montevideo we continued further along the coast, to La Barra near to the famous resort area of Punta del Este. We ended the month inland from the coast visiting a striking winery hotel, Sacramonte, and ending the month at the historic estancia turned hotel, San Pedro de Timote. Located at the foot of a string of stratovolcanoes 50 miles (80 km) from San Pedro de Atacama, this area is covered with geysers and gassy fumaroles that produce hissing noises and giving off dramatic amounts of steam. Most trips to the Tatio Geysers depart San Pedro de Atacama extremely early, travel for about 2 hours on often very rough dirt roads to reach the site, then serve (a sometimes rudimentary) breakfast at the geyser field. Visitors can stroll along marked pathways to view some of the 80+ geysers and 100+ bubbling fumaroles before returning to San Pedro de Atacama along those same bad roads. Be prepared for high altitude (the Tatio Geyser Field is at 14,710 feet/4,320 meters) and changing weather (layers are best). We gained 3,466 feet (1,056 meters) during the nearly vertical 3.5 mile (5.6 km) trailless scramble up Cerro Castillo. Our reward was lunch on a flat roomy plateau as dozens of Andean condors streamed close overhead as if on some invisible big bird highway. In total, we drove 1,718 miles (2,765 km) during March 2024. Here are highlights from our September 2024 road trip in Argentina. We started the month in the Uco Valley of Mendoza Province and first went to Mendoza city. We left Mendoza and started driving toward Buenos Aires first crossing the neighboring province of San Luis with a quick stop at the Gruta Incahuasi cave and the disappointing Casa Piedra Pintada pictoglyphs San Luis Province. Continuing onto Córdoba Province we crossed the Sierras Grandes mountains and did some hiking in Quebrada Condorito Condorito National Park where we saw many of the namesake Andean condors. Crossing Córdoba we briefly stopped at Laguna Mar Chiquita, the largest naturally occurring saline lake in Argentina. We then entered Santa Fe Province where our first stop was Moisés Ville, a town founded in 1889 by Eastern European and Russian Jews escaping pogroms and persecution. These settlers were known as Jewish gauchos and this tiny town in the middle of Argentina's agricultural center has an interesting museum as well as several synagogues and a Jewish cemetery. From there we made our first visit to the city of Santa Fe, the capital of Santa Fe Province, then onto the nearby city of Rosario. Rosario, the 3rd largest city in Argentina is also the birthplace of the national hero, Leonel Messi. From Rosario we entered Buenos Aires Province where we spent the last part of September exploring San Antonio de Areco, Mercedes, Lujan, and Salto before heading to the capital city, Buenos Aires.
