F-35A LIGHTNING CREATING “WOLFIE” #f35 #vulcan Description: Listen to this awesome phenomenon caused by design and change in air intake from accelerating. Those that miss the Avro Vulcan may bring back the memories when the F-35A starts howling. The Vulcan had its very own distinctive howl which was unique to the aircraft. What causes the howl? Well, this is is caused by the intakes of the aircraft as it sucks in all the air. But other factors can determine the overall sound in which the aircraft makes, such as the actual aerodynamic design of the wing and intakes. If the intakes were a different design, it would probably change the pitch/sound too. There are two combat-ready fighter squadron that operate the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II; 493d Fighter Squadron "The Grim Reapers" and the 495th Fighter Squadron "Valkyries". It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was originally built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940. The airfield started life out as decoy airfield (Q-site) to RAF Mildenhall, which is about 5.5 miles the way the backwards crow flies. RAF Mildenhall was an established bomber station built in 1934 and to protect it, Lakenheath was chosen to become a decoy, to take any attacks. However, things changes and it was decided that RAF Lakenheath would become a satellite station to Mildenhall. Lakenheath was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group. On the 15th January 1941, the US Army Air Corps activated the 48th Bombardment Group (Light). During WW2, the 492d, 493d and 494th Fighters Squadrons were trained and were significantly involved in the Normandy Landings, Operation Overlord and the Invasion of France. Their combat sorties involved bombings raids over bridges, railway lines and carried out reconnaissance missions. It was on the 10th July 1952, the Oklahoma Air National Guard 137th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France was redesignated as the 48th Fighter-Bomber Wing. The Statue of Liberty was actually made near the base and the Mayor of the town gave a ceremonial name to the base as the "Statue of Liberty Wing". The 48th Fighter Wing is the only Wing in the USAF to have a number and a name! It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. LR, LS and LT were the tail codes for the base with the F-100's but when they transitioned to the Phantom, a temporary tail code of LK was introduced until a few months later it changed once more to LN, which is active today. In 1977 a fourth squadron joined Lakenheath's 48th, the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were known as the "Thundervarks" flying the F-111's. However, they deactivated in 1991. They also sported the green tail flash. In 1991, The 48th Tactical Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too. The station was under the command of 5 group and the airfield was first constructed with grass runways. 5 Group was formed at RAF Mildenhall on the 1st September 1937 but later moved to Morton Hall, Swinderby, Lincolnshire. It was on the 4th November 1940 that RAF Coningsby opened and their first aircraft to operate on the airfield were Handley Page Hampden and Avro Manchester Bombers. In February 1941, 106 SQUADRON (markings: ZN) were the first residence of Coningsby and the following month went into combat with raids on Cologne. A month after the raids, 97 Squadron (Markings: OF) joined 106 squadron with the 2 engine powered Avro Manchesters. 106 Squadron later operated the Manchesters, which at the time had bad reputation for being unreliable with its underpowered two engines. In 1942, 106 Squadron was to have a new Wing Commander. Aged just 23, Wing Commander Guy Gibson took command of the Squadron. The moral was strongly boosted and with Guy Gibson as their Wing Commander, they awaited for their new four engined version of the Manchester, the Avro Lancaster. 97 Squadron became the second operational squadron to receive the Lancaster, the first was 44 squadron, based at RAF Waddington. In 1942, RAF Coningsby's aircraft took part in the 1000 Bomber raids over Cologne. When the base closed in 1942 to be resurfaced with hardened concrete runways, 617 "Dambusters" Squadron arrived and operated for a brief period in 1943. Further Lancaster squadrons arrived. 619 Squadron also operated out of Coningsby before moving to Dunholme Lodge. After the WW2, RAF Coningsby was operating a variety of aircraft over the next few decades. Mosquitos in 1946, the in 1950 the Boeing Washington (B-29) followed by Coningsby's first ever jet aircraft in 1953, the English Electric Canberra. In 1962, RAF Coningsby received the Vulcan Bombers but this was only to last just for two years. With the EE Canberra was replaced by the Phantom FGR2 in 1968 with squadrons 228 OCU, 41(F), 6, 29(F), 23(F) and 56(F). In 1976, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight made Coningsby their home and the following year saw Coningsby's Phantom squadron leave for RAF Wattisham to take of a QRA role. Jaguars, Harriers and finally Tornado F3's made the base their new home. The Tornado F3 arrived in 1984 and in 2003, 17 Squadron, who were based at Warton, received the Typhoon, to become the first ever Typhoon squadron. Throughout the rest of the year and until Spring 2025, you see will the Red Arrows practicing their sequences in many various formations, from singletons, synchro pairs, Enid or Hanna and even their full Diamond Nine, training and practicing to be who they are...the ECLAT. We also welcome two new Red Arrows pilots, who have already begun training for the 2025 display season. Flight Lieutenants Rob Thomas and Andrew McEwen have joined the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team with years of experience operating on the frontline, including with the Typhoon and F-35B aircraft. The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, is one of the world's premier aerobatic display teams.The Red Arrows are currently the only unit in the Royal Air Force to fly the Hawk T1. Flying distinctive Hawk fast-jets, the team is made up of pilots, engineers and essential support staff with frontline, operational experience. Together, they demonstrate the excellence and capabilities of the Royal Air Force and the Service’s skilled, talented people. Often with their trademark Diamond Nine shape, and combination of close formations and precision flying, the Red Arrows have been displaying since 1965. All Red Arrows display pilots have flown operationally, in frontline aircraft such as the advanced Typhoon, and helped the Royal Air Force to secure the skies every day of the year. Red Arrows pilots are selected from currently serving RAF pilots who have completed at least 1,500 hours of flying and one operational tour. The selection process involves flying assessments, interviews, and peer assessments, with only three pilots being chosen each year The Red Arrows are famous for their vibrant vapour trails - often known as the smoke. They are a crucial element of the team's displays, primarily for flight safety. The vapour trails allow Red 1 to judge wind speed and direction, and allow the aircraft to locate each other in the second half of the show when different sections of the formation are frequently several miles apart. The vivid and colourful smoke trails also enhance the visual impact of the display when viewed from the ground. Well known manoeuvres such as the heart, rollbacks and carousel would just not be the same without it. The Red Arrows have two dedicated dye teams who ensure the aircraft's under-fuselage pods - from which the coloured dye is contained - are replenished. These engineers travel all over the country, working within tight timescales to ensure that when Red 1 makes the call it is "Smoke on, Go!" Then you have roll posts for the lateral control and a 3 Bearing Swivel Module (3BSM) which is thrust vectoring to us, oh and in 2.5 seconds can do a 95 degree turn. The Liftsystem by Rolls Royce is the world’s only STOVL technology for supersonic jets. Since 1969 RR have delivered unrivalled STOVL expertise. The system is a descendant of the Pegasus engine. Rolls‑Royce has been the industry leader in short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) technology for 60 years. 207 Squadron is the joint RAF and Royal Navy Operational Conversion Unit for Lightning. It started as 7 Naval Air Squadron in 1916 at Petit-Synthe, France. The squadron then became part of the RAF in 1918 and in 1938, they became the Fairey Battle operational training unit at RAF Cottesmore. In 1968, 207 reformed at RAF Northolt as the RAF Communications Squadron, disbanding again in 1984. The Eurofighter Typhoon is powered by Rolls Royce EJ200 engines which is a low bypass (bypass ratio 0.4:1) engine with 3 Low Pressure and 5 High Pressure compressor stages which compresses the air to 26 times! The EJ200 sits as far back as the last 20% of the fuselage, this means a long tube of air intakes. After the hottest part of the engine after the fuel injectors are, this is pretty much it for a conventional everyday jet engine which for the EJ200 produces around 15,500lbs of thrust. However, the powerful Rolls Royce Eurojet engines can blast out another 30% more power by whacking on the reheats (Afterburners) to deliver a total of 20,000lbs of thrust each with burners! When the weather is less emotional, when pilots are executing a PTO, from the moment of releasing the brakes with full reheats on, get to 180mph (not even past the arrestor gear) and pull into a 60 degree and vertical climb. Air ISTAR is the RAF’s eyes and ears in the sky and provides British and NATO military commanders with critical information about activity on the ground, in the air, and at sea. The Air Warfare Centre at RAF Waddington provides timely and contextual integrated mission support to front line commanders. RAF Waddington has been almost continuously active since opening as a Royal Flying Corps training base in 1916 teaching hundreds of pilots to fly a wide variety of aircraft. With the run-down of squadrons after the War, the Station was put on a care and maintenance basis in 1920. Waddington was the first base of the RAF to operate the Avro Lancaster with 44 Squadron. Post-war Waddington hosted a variety of Lancaster, and Avro Lincoln squadrons, and a squadron of lend lease Washingtons, before preparations began for the arrival of the Vulcan bomber. In June 1955 two Canberra squadrons arrived and the first Vulcans arrived in May 1957. By August 1961, three squadrons of Vulcans formed the Waddington Wing which remained here until March 1984 with the type’s planned retirement being postponed because of the Falklands conflict. RAF Waddington provided the three Vulcans for the Black Buck raids that bombed Argentine positions at Port Stanley airport. With many RAF tankers supporting the airbridge to the Falklands, six Vulcans were hastily modified for air-to-air refuelling duties to support training back in the UK. Today, Waddington is one of the RAF’s busiest operational airfields and its squadrons and personnel are involved in supporting operations all around the world. Despite the demanding operational tempo, the Station continues to maintain a high profile and has delivered record-breaking Air Shows until 2014.
