This summer has been packed with so many amazing moments, and for the journal's sake, I wanted to capture it all here. Dorothy graduated from elementary school, and we took a nostalgic trip back to Colorado where Jess grew up, reconnecting with her old coach who has always been important to her. Dorothy also attended soccer camp at my alma mater BYU, which made me incredibly happy. We spent quality time with my family at a cozy cabin, sang our hearts out on road trips, and had endless fun zip lining, swimming in vacation pools, and splashing around water parks. Our kids bonded in the most beautiful ways, whether they were surfing, dancing in the rain, or enjoying backyard games with friends. We had thrilling helicopter rides, wake surfing adventures behind a boat, and even saw dolphins up close. Music was a big part of our summer, with special moments around the piano, a visit from Andy Grammer to sing at our house, and seeing Justin Timberlake live. Manilla even took the stage to dance and break dance with his friends, and we had fun with lighted swords, and saw our friend's Derek Hough's performance. These moments of being together as a family are the ones we'll cherish forever. A big thank you to Qatar Airways for partnering with us and making this experience possible. For the last few years, I’ve been in denial, trying everything within my power to stop you from growing up. But as of today, I’ve decided to change my stubborn ways and not only accept the fact that you are growing up, but I will embrace it. This decision feels good for me :) I think it feels good because I know that you and I have made the most of the last 12 years together. So I’m telling myself to not be sad. Just keep making the most of our time together, every year and every day. I’m so grateful for our relationship. I’ve cherished every day since the day you were born, on my birthday! You are the best gift to me that ever was. We have so many great memories that are grand, but I’m also grateful for the small memories like “don’t eat me for dinner daddy” and “sweetie girl” and “squid falling from the sky” ;) Thank you, Dorothy, for being my daughter. Please never grow apart from me as you get older. Please know I will always be here for you, always ready to hug you and hold you and listen to you, especially when you make mistakes in life like every human does…including mom and dad :) I’m also going to try to do better to let you become your own person. I know I often strongly encourage you to make my passions your own. Hopefully it’s not too much. I just love you and love my passions and want you to feel the same joys I have in life. But I’ve been learning so much lately from witnessing how much you love reading, and school, and acting and other things that I don’t relate to quite like you do. YOU BE YOU. Honestly, in so many ways, I wish I was more like you. You’re so incredibly creative, driven, and talented! When I saw you glowing on stage during your plays this week it made me happier than anything. You were beaming with the type of joy that can only come from following your passions! Never stop being so passionate about the things you care about. You can’t teach motivation and drive at the level you have it, so be grateful for it and never let that fire go out. The fire of caring soooo much about everything you do is also a burden, I live with it too, and I know it can be terrible and feel like a burden, but I promise you, a life of not caring too much about anything is far, far worse. KEEP CARING! Dorothy, here’s a secret that will make the difference between spending your life doing what you love OR spending your days working at a job that you dislike just to get by. The secret sauce is this: Be BRAVE enough to pursue your passions. Have the SELF CONFIDENCE that you can make your dreams come true. And then WORK HARD enough at your passions to become truly great. If you do those things, then your passion can become your craft and you will wake up each day excited to live your life, working hard even if it doesn’t feel like work because you love what you do. Finally, I’ve been really grateful to see you with such great friends in your life. I especially love how close you are with Manilla and Calihan. Please PLEASE please make extra effort these upcoming teenage years to keep that love and friendship with your brothers strong. You are a leader in this family. Your brothers look up to you. This was one of those heart-stopping, breathtaking moments that we'll cherish forever. Seeing her soar through the mist with the waterfall roaring behind her—wow, just wow! Manilla and Cali were her biggest cheerleaders, and we all faced our fears together as a family. It’s moments like these that make us so grateful for this life of adventure. But the rope swing was just the tip of the iceberg! Our time in Sri Lanka was packed with unforgettable experiences. We stayed at some amazing places, like the Wild Coast Lodge, where we were surrounded by wildlife and the ocean. We woke up each morning to the sounds of nature, and one day, we even had monkeys running across our tent! The kids were in awe, and so were we. Speaking of wildlife, we had the wildest encounter with an elephant on the road during one of our safaris. Picture this: we’re in our tuk-tuks, exploring the beautiful Sri Lankan countryside, when a massive bull elephant decided he wasn’t too thrilled with our presence. He charged at us! Talk about an adrenaline rush—Garrett’s face said it all. But we stayed calm (mostly thanks to Manilla's cool head) and made it through safely. This was a reminder of just how close we were to nature in Sri Lanka, living side by side with these incredible creatures. We also had the chance to experience one of Sri Lanka’s iconic train rides. If you’ve ever seen those pictures of people hanging out the doors of a train winding through lush green hills, that was us! It was like something out of a movie—slow-moving, peaceful, and absolutely stunning. The kids loved the adventure, and we got to see so much more of the country this way. And of course, what’s a trip to Sri Lanka without some surfing? We spent our mornings catching waves at the Jetwing Surf resort. We even had a 5 a.m. dawn patrol surf session, with the kids taking on the waves while the rest of the world was just waking up. The contrast between the quiet, early morning surf and the lively, late-night scenes we passed on our way to the beach was hilarious and unforgettable. After all the excitement, we made time for some much-needed relaxation by our private pool, but even that turned into an adventure when we spotted a giant snake nearby! Jess was the first to notice it, and let’s just say there were a few panicked moments before it slithered away. Sri Lanka kept us on our toes, that’s for sure! This trip was full of firsts for us—our first time seeing a wild peacock, our first outdoor shower under the stars, and our first time navigating the wild roads of Sri Lanka with the kids. We were so proud of him, and he was beaming with excitement! Definitely a memory we’ll treasure forever. Food, Friends, and Farewell in Hanoi Our last stop in Vietnam was Hanoi, where we immersed ourselves in the local food scene with the guidance of our incredible host, Quinn. From cooking classes to food tours, we savored every dish, especially the pho! Vietnam's food, culture, and people left a huge mark on us, and we’re already dreaming of coming back. This adventure is packed with fun, excitement, and some big surprises. We kicked off our trip by exploring a stunning new house! The kids were thrilled with the pool and waterslide, and we spent hours splashing around and jumping from the balcony into the pool. The house was enormous, with secret rooms and plenty of space for everyone. Our adventures didn't stop there. We had the most magical morning paddle boarding on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe. Despite the chilly air and water, the experience was breathtaking and a perfect way to bond as a family. We also had a blast clear kayaking at Secret Harbor. The water was so clear it felt like we were floating on air. The kids loved spotting rocks and fish below, and we even found a cool rock to jump off and swim around. One of the highlights of our trip was throwing the first pitch at a Reno Aces game! It was a dream come true to walk out onto the field as a family and make that memorable throw. The atmosphere was electric, and the kids were over the moon to see themselves on the jumbotron. Our adventures continued with some thrilling cliff jumps and trying out new water sports. Cali showed off his bravery with some impressive jumps, and we all had a blast cheering him on. Throughout the week, we took on various challenges, from via ferrata courses to surfing. we conquered our fear of heights, and Garrett gave his all trying to master foil surfing, even if he didn't quite nail it. This trip wasn't just about fun and games. We also had some important meetings about potentially making Lake Tahoe our permanent home. Getting barreled has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, and finally experiencing it was absolutely magical. In this video, you'll see the excitement and preparation that went into this epic surf trip. From the months of planning and training to the anticipation leading up to our departure, it was all worth it. We traveled to the beautiful Mentawai Islands in Indonesia, a paradise for surfers. The scenery was breathtaking, and the waves were perfect. One of the highlights of the trip was a magical morning surf session. The sun was rising, casting a beautiful rainbow across the sky, and the water was glassy and smooth. As I paddled for a wave, I felt a rush of adrenaline and pure joy. I saw the wave starting to barrel, and I knew this was my moment. I committed fully, and as the wave enveloped me, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and happiness. It was everything I had hoped for and more. This journey wasn't just about surfing, though. It was also about spending quality time with my friends, sharing laughs, and creating unforgettable memories. We had deep, meaningful conversations about life, family, and being better men. It was a unique opportunity to connect on a deeper level and grow together. I want to thank everyone who made this trip possible, especially my amazing wife, who supported me every step of the way, and Perfect Wave Travel for organizing this dream adventure. We stayed on the 107th floor, but that wasn’t even the craziest part — the gym and the pool were on the 118th floor, making it the tallest pool in the entire world! Swimming there felt surreal, with mirrors on the ceiling and views that made you feel like you were flying. We’ll be honest — heights aren’t exactly our favorite, but this stay was something we’ll never forget. The kids were in awe, especially when we walked into our beautiful room and were greeted with traditional milk tea. It was these small touches, the hospitality, and the stunning views that made our stay at the Ritz-Carlton so memorable. Dorothy, Manilla, and Cali were mesmerized by every detail, and it was such a special moment for our family to experience together. Of course, we couldn't visit Hong Kong without stopping by Hong Kong Disneyland! 🏰 The kids had no idea we were taking them there, and we couldn’t wait to see their faces when we revealed the big surprise. In the morning, we asked them, “Do you want to keep sleeping or go to Hong Kong Disneyland?” Needless to say, it didn’t take much convincing — they were ready to go in an instant! Hong Kong Disneyland was everything we could have hoped for and more. From the moment we walked in, the park felt like pure magic. The rain might have scared off some of the crowds, but that just meant more Disney magic for us! We explored everything from the iconic castle — inspired by over 14 different Disney princesses — to our favorite rides like Jungle Cruise and RC Racer. We’ve been to other Disney parks around the world, but this one just felt different. It was smaller, yes, but it was also more intimate, and the rides were incredibly unique. The kids’ favorite was the Jungle Cruise, which felt so different from the ones in Disneyland and Disney World. And we have to say, their version of Haunted Mansion was so fun! Instead of being spooky, it was more lighthearted, which made it perfect for the whole family. The day at Disneyland was full of laughter, smiles, and memories we’ll hold onto forever. Cali, in particular, was so brave on the rides, and seeing the joy on Dorothy and Manilla’s faces as we explored the park made it all worth it. Every time we finished a ride, we all said, "That was the best one!" It’s honestly hard to pick a favorite, but the park itself definitely left a lasting impression on us. As parents, we feel so lucky to be able to share these experiences with our kids. Watching them grow, learn, and explore the world is one of the greatest gifts we could ever ask for. Whether it was staying at the world’s tallest hotel, enjoying a dim sum cooking class, or embracing the magic of Disney, this trip to Hong Kong was a beautiful reminder of how much there is to see and do together as a family.
