This slime acts as a protective barrier to prevent parasites from attaching to the fish's skin. However, in the case of koi in this fish pond, excessive slime production prevented effective treatment of the Trichodina and skin fluke fish parasites. While a single round of medication would have typically been effective, the abundant slime coat inadvertently shielded the parasites from direct contact with the treatment, allowing them to survive and continue harming the fish. In this video, we explore the issues caused by excessive slime and demonstrate a novel modified treatment approach for a successful cure to the fish diseases. Dr Loh discovers a parasite and a nutritional deficiency negatively effecting the fish. Fish lice are easily diagnosed with the naked-eye. They are disc-shaped fish parasites that cause such extreme irritation that they flash and even jump out of the water in attempts to dislodge them. Fish with heavy parasitic infestations will die. It is important to treat them early, and choice of medicine will be determined by several factors which is explained in the video. I have found that lumps occurring at the base of fish tails are notoriously complicated to remove - primarily due to their high vascularity. It was touch and go in Gollie's case where the wound kept on bleeding after the tumour was removed. In this video, I show you how haemostasis was finally achieved using a few different tricks. Because most fish species have hard dorsal spines that can only bend backwards, predators have to swallow their prey head-first. However, if they try to swallow a fish that’s too large to pass through the oesophagus, the backward-angled spines of their prey prevent the predator from spitting the fish back out. As the old saying goes, “Their eyes are bigger than their mouth!” In our latest video, we attend to a Jewel cichlid that attempted to eat a juvenile, but it got stuck and had begun to rot. Hexamita is a flagellated protozoal parasite that commonly infects the intestines in many species of fish, especially African Rift Lake Cichlids. The disease can cause bloating of the gut which is why it is sometimes commonly referred to as "Malawi bloat". Hexamita can also cause white poorly formed faeces. A rare presentation of hexamitiasis is shown in this investigation with a fish developing rectal prolapse. We show you how we diagnose and use the different forms of metronidazole to treat against Hexamita in aquarium fish.
