They needed both communications and control along their electrical networks and fiber optics provided a perfect solution– offering the ability to transmits lots of data long distances at high speeds, plus fiber's immunity to electromagnetic interreference make it an ideal medium to install along high voltage transmission lines. In this lecture, we'll look at how fiber optics is used by electrical utilities in all parts of their networks and offers a solution to providing broadband in rural areas that are ignored by most other service providers. </video> <video> Lecture 59 Fiber Optic Cable Midspan Access Description: Many installations involve splitting the fibers in a backbone cable into one or more other cables or dropping a small fiber count cable from a large backbone cable. Backbone cables of 144-288 fibers are common and larger ones are becoming more common too. Drop cables are often only 2-12 fibers, meaning most fibers are continuing straight through the drop point. Midspan access involves opening the cable by removing the jacket and strength members, opening the buffer tube and splicing only the fibers being dropped at that point. The untouched buffer tubes from the opened cable are carefully rolled up and stored in the same splice closure as the fibers that will be separated and spliced to a drop cable. This FOA Lecture will explain what midspan access is and how it is done. </video> <video> Lecture 62 On The Job Training For Fiber Optics Using Fiber U Description: Many fiber optic techs learn on the job so "On The Job Training" - OJT- is very important for developing the knowledge and skills needed by their work. FOA has worked with both employers and employees to develop an OJT program using the FOA's Fiber U free online learning site to help make OJT more effective. In this video, we discuss the specifications for power in a data link, including power budgets, loss budgets and the receiver operating range and how that affects data link performance. It's a great way for instructors to show students how a fiber optic link works and have them test its operation and link loss as part of a hands-on lab. </video> <video> Lecture 71 Reference Cables For Fiber Optic Testing Description: In order to test cables with a power meter and source or with an OTDR, one needs to establish test conditions. The test conditions are similar to how the actual cable plant will be used when communications equipment is connected (see below.) For insertion loss testing, this requires reference launch jumper cables to connect the test source to the fiber in the cable under test and receive cables to connect the fiber optic power meter. For OTDR testing, this requires a reference launch cable to connect the OTDR to the fiber in the cable under test and a receive cable at the far end of the fiber. This video covers why one needs reference cables, hot they are used for both insertion loss and OTDR testing, how they affect measurements, how to choose them and care for tehm. </video>
