This Kraken illustration is based on sea creatures that can be come across on Medieval maps such as the famous Sea Orm from the Carta Marina that was created by Olaus Magnus in 1539. We start by going over the contour of the leaf with a thin nib ink pen such as sizes 003, 005, 01 (suitable for small details and miniature drawings). Here I am using Sakura Pigma Micron with black archival ink which is waterproof and fade resistant. In order to have the same thickness of line weight for the whole contour, try to keep a steady pressure on your pen when drawing. When drawing midrib and veins on the leaf, however, you can apply light pressure on the pen to make thinner line to give the leaf some contrast and volume. Another option would be to draw veins and midrib with interrupted lines. To do so, slightly lift your pen when drawing at random intervals. Variation in line thickness and steadiness between the veins and the contour will make your leaf look more interesting and realistic. If space and design allow, you can shade your leaf with cross hatching or stippling techniques. Stippling is an art technique of applying dots or specks of pigment to create a visual effect such as shadows or depth. Stippling technique allows for precise control over tone, texture, and form. As for cross hatching, it means drawing parallel lines in one direction and then layering another set of parallel lines over them. Adjusting the density, angle, and spacing of the lines can help to achieve different effects. The lines should follow the shape of the object to make the artwork look more realistic. The borders are richly decorated with dainty gold florals. 📜The first piece is called A Ruler in His Bedchamber - it is an illustration from an unidentified work of Persian prose.
