Research being undertaken by scientists at James Cook University are showing promising signs for treating breast cancer. When compounds from the spider venom are exposed to breast cancer cells they die. But don’t take this as a weakness because the scarder (yes that is a word, Google said so…) they are, the more potent their venom becomes. No-one has been able to show this in any other venomous animal. Here’s how it all goes down (or up in this case..) Scorpions have two components to their venom. One for using in defence against furry animals with sharp teeth such as small marsupials and mice who like to eat scorpions and the other to capture prey such as crickets and spiders. What researches found was that when the scorpion was regularly exposed to predators i.e the highly frightening frankenmouse, the amount of venom for defence increased and the venom for capturing prey decreased. Which makes perfect sense, you need to try and give anything that is going to eat you as much whoop-ass as possible which comes in the form of a deadly tail fashioned with a venomous sting. What is even more amazing is that they can do this within 4 weeks! If a venomous snake tried to pull that off, it would take them generations, which makes it super cool for a scorpion to be a super scary cat. We admit we have a pretty warped sense of humour. But when you sit back and look at it, the Dumpling Squid does kinda look like a potential 'love-child' of the two don't you think? Now before you get all excited, unlike some of it’s other relatives this is not the type of dumpling squid you would see served up at yum cha. Bummer we know… It’s only 7cm long, so even if you found them at an all you could eat buffet, they still wouldn’t fill you up. They’re a type of bobtail squid that you find at night along the cooler southern shores of Australia, typically in sandy habitats and seagrass areas. The bonus is, their cuteness can also be found in their cousins that live all around the world. They move around using two forms of locomotion. The hilarious body fins on the side of their heads, which they flap like wings and jet propulsion. They achieve this by contracting their mantle or body which squeezes water out past their head through a siphon. As you can imagine these squid are tasty little delicacies in the sea for a range of animals, so they have a number of ways to avoid being eaten. They can produce ink which acts as a decoy and allows them to escape. They can play hide’n’seek by hiding under a sandy cloak, using mucus glands to glue the sand on (which it can also shed as a decoy) and if all else fails they can bury themselves in the sand. When they’re not being scaredy-cats and hiding you’ll find then hunting at night where they feed on shrimps. A set of the retractable tentacles makes sure that no shrimp gets away. When it comes to making more dumpling squid…. A male will hold onto their female with four of his arms where he gives her his love (in the form of a sperm packet) and they can spend about 3 hours in a squid embrace. They're so tired after this they go into what scientists describe as a ‘squid sex coma’ where they can’t swim and need to rest for up to 30mins, usually hiding in the sand to avoid predators. </video> <video> How killer cone snails kill Description: There’s a saying in the sea, 'If it’s a cone, leave it alone'. Although they look pretty harmless cone nails are pretty deadly. They're a chemical making factory that travels around an a giant sticky foot firing venomous harpoons filled a deadly cocktail that paralyses their prey. This cocktail essentially kill their victims half a dozen different ways. Once the prey has been immobilised it is swallowed whole. Different cone snails have different venom depending on their diet i.e. invertebrates cf vertebrates. Understandably humans are only susceptible to the venom from the vertebrates. Scientists have found a compound in the venom that is more potent than morphine. Consider this..A single cone shell can contain over 100 conopeptides x multiple this out over 500 cone snails species and that’s 50,000 compounds to investigate for medicine. Imagine the potential……That’s just the nature of things. You'll get sweaty with the long hot sticky nights but here's a tip – It doesn’t include buxom babes in skimpy bikini’s in a jelly filled blow up pool. For this type of wrestling, your pool is the warm tropical waters of North Queensland and your opponents are pulsating gelatinous jellies with deadly tentacles. The aim? To try and collect these blobs of goop, while keeping away from the tentacles at all costs. The flat fettuccine-like tentacles are laced with billions of microscopic venomous filled harpoons that fire on contact. It’s life and death occupation as you come face to face with animals that can kill you in under 2 minutes flat if you’re silly enough to get too close and entangled in its tentacles. That's a typical day for world leading scientist Professor Jamie Seymour who wrestles jellies and a a zillion other deadly animals. In this video Jamie introduces you to the Big Box Jellyfish, the biggest blob from this fascinating family of cubozoans, with their trademark box-like head of 'bell' . Affectionately known as the 'Big boxie' it measures in at around 38cm, with 15 deadly tentacles that hang from each corner. These can measure up to 3 metres each. Add that all up and this equates to around 180 metres of impressive firepower as the tentacles are laced with billions of venomous harpoons called nematocysts. It’s the deadliest animal on the planet. Pretty impressive for an animal that is made up of 96% water. The study of these animals and their venom profile has revealed some interesting discoveries which is helping scientists to better understand how it impacts people who have been unlucky enough to be stung and the methods for treatment. Wait! What? Backup! Yep you heard right 'Home is where the bum is', if you're a pearl fish and that bum is a sea cucumber. Sea cucumbers are sausage shape animals that are found on the bottom of the ocean where they vacuum up the sand and filter out all the good bits. It seems as though pearl fish have taken a bit of a fancy for some particular sea cucumbers and set up house in their rear end. Why? Is it the million dollar ocean views? We asked all these questions and more. The upside is, any place you live from now on is going to seem like paradise. We have never seen soooooo many crabs. We know some people are going to be freaked out, but us? Hey throw is in there and let them crawl over us (did I mention we were a weird bunch??? ) Every year as the waters cool on the southern shores, hundreds of thousands of Giant Spider crabs find their way up on the sandy shallows Rye and Blairgworie in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne Australia. This happens between May - July ever year and the result is a moving sea of orange crabs that blanket the shallows. As the name suggests these crabs are massive. Their legs are over 70cm long with a body measuring nearly 17cm wide. They move in organised chaos on 8 long legs. Their weapons, swollen claws. Their mission, seek shelter in the safety of the sandy shallows, moult and in some cases mate. Like most crustaceans, a hard suit of armour protects these crabs. What it doesn't allow the crabs to do though is grow. So the crabs need to get rid of the old armour and grow a new bigger one. To do this, they secrete a special enzyme that separates the old shell from the underlying skin, while a new soft paper-like shell is secreted beneath the old one. The crabs then start absorbing seawater and swell, causing the old shell to come apart. The soldier’s shell then simply opens up like a lid and the crab extracts itself. Once one crab starts to moult it sets off a chain reaction and the rest of the orange-clad army moult almost simultaneously. Moulting not allows the crabs to grow, it helps to rid them of parasites and other animals growing on their shells including bacteria that can weaken and erode their protective uniform. It’s thought that by aggregating and moulting together, the less chance they have of getting eaten, a simple case of safety in numbers. During this moulting process, the soft crabs are vulnerable to the mouths of hungry hunters. Whether they have fur, fins, shells or scales, Australia has them. Snakes are no exception. In fact Australia is known to have loads of venomous snakes. Some of the most venomous on the planet. Think the Inland Taipan, Brown, Mulga, Death Adder and Tiger Snakes. So the TNOS team set out to explore just why our snakes are so darn venomous. What we discovered is that it depends on a number of factors including: * How much food is available; * The volume of venom the snakes produce; * Minimising injury to the snake; and * The potency of the venom. As it swims along, this tiny jelly extends its tentacles and twitches them much like a fisher or fly-fisher would to attract prey in the water. The balls of venomous stinging cells (nematocysts) act like a lure and attract fish. When contact is made with the tentacles the venomous harpoons are fired into the prey which paralyses them. And with good reason. Its aim is to incapacitate its victims and boy does it work a treat. What's really interesting is that not all venoms are equal and not all work the same way. They're as diverse as the animals that deliver it. From clotting blood, causing paralysis and destroying living cells. It's a fascinating world that Assoc. Professor Jamie Seymour knows a thing or ten about, after all that's his shtick. So given that he's a fun-loving sharing kind of guy he given us a bit of a lesson, kind a like a venom 101 of his world (which is venomology and toxinology which are tricky words to say let alone spell) showing us how they work on their victims which sometimes include the human-kind, and the results are..... all sorts of awesome! He also sets us straight on the difference venom and poison, which we will now be able to use with so much confidence, the world will think he has been cloned! Quite frankly it's the type of commitment we admire. Meet the Tasselled Anglerfish the ultimate fisher. Nothing escapes this angler. It’s the master of disguise with camouflage so brilliant it can sit out in the open and not be seen. Silent and still it either waits for their prey to pass or lures their victims by casting the rod and worm-like bait. And in the sea there is no such thing as a free feed. Any fish that tries to take the bait is swallowed whole, no time for chewing! It’s expandable mouth acting like a vacuum to suck up its prey. From beginning to mouth filling end, it’s all over in a split second. Fish fall for the lure every time, hook, line and sinker. What is really cool is that this is the first time that this behaviour has been filmed in high speed and the results are nothing short of spectacular. PLEASE NOTE: Do not try this at home. Sticking a rod and worm-like lure to your face could result in untold injuries and years embarrassment. PS. It has the bragging rights as one of the most deadly fish in the sea, with venomous spines that are lethal. The upside for any fish is that it doesn’t use these spines for hunting. The downside, it’s a master of camouflage. It secrets a liquid-like fertiliser called crynotoxin (meaning toxic skin), which it covers the all over it's body to attract marine algae to settle on its skin. This creates a deadly garden helps it to blend in seamlessly into it's surroundings, where it waits for passing prey.
