Description: Are miraculous gifts, such as speaking in tongues, prophecy, and special revelations, still active today? Or were they temporary tools used during the early church to confirm the Word and establish the faith? In this episode of The Preacher Online, we dive deep into Scripture to uncover the purpose, duration, and conclusion of miraculous gifts. We'll explore: • Why miraculous gifts were given and their specific purpose in God's plan. • Scriptural evidence showing these gifts were temporary and tied to the apostolic age. • The sufficiency of God’s Word as the foundation of our faith and godliness today. • Common objections to cessationism and how to address them biblically. • The dangers of seeking signs over trusting the completed revelation of Scripture. This study challenges the modern charismatic movement's claims, refocusing our faith on the solid foundation of the Bible and the resurrection of Christ—the ultimate sign God has given us. As promised, here are some references from "Church Fathers" in regard to the cessation of Apostolic gifts of the Spirit: 1. John Chrysostom (c. 347–407 AD) John Chrysostom, one of the most prominent church fathers and Archbishop of Constantinople, wrote extensively on the Scriptures. Commenting on 1 Corinthians 12, Chrysostom acknowledged that the miraculous gifts described in the New Testament had ceased: “The whole place is very obscure; but the obscurity is produced by our ignorance of the facts referred to and by their cessation, being such as then used to occur but now no longer take place.” ________________________________________ 2. Augustine (c. 354–430 AD) Augustine, one of the most influential theologians in church history, also affirmed that miraculous gifts were temporary. In his early writings, he acknowledged their presence in the apostolic age but noted their cessation: “In the earliest times, the Holy Ghost fell upon them that believed; and they spoke with tongues, which they had not learned, as the Spirit gave them utterance. These were signs adapted to the time. For there behooved to be that betokening of the Holy Spirit... That thing was done for a betokening, and it passed away.” ________________________________________ 3. Origen (c. 185–254 AD) Origen, an early Christian scholar and theologian, also commented on the diminishing presence of miraculous gifts in his time: “Moreover, the Holy Spirit gave signs of His presence at the beginning of Christ’s ministry, and after His ascension He gave still more; but since that time these signs have diminished.” ________________________________________ 4. Tertullian (c. 160–225 AD) Tertullian, one of the earliest Christian apologists, acknowledged the role of miracles in the early church but noted their cessation: “When we cease to observe them, it is because of our lack of discipline, or the completion of revelation.” ________________________________________ 5. Eusebius (c. 260–340 AD) Eusebius, known as the “Father of Church History,” wrote about the apostolic age and the spread of the gospel. He observed that miraculous gifts were unique to the foundational period of the church: “But the truth is that the whole operation of the gifts of the Spirit passed long ago to the rest of the human race and has since ceased.” Eusebius viewed the gifts as part of the unique outpouring of the Spirit during the early church. His writings reflect the historical reality that these gifts were not continuing into his era. ________________________________________ 6. Irenaeus (c. 130–202 AD) Irenaeus, writing in the second century, spoke of miracles in the apostolic age but noted their decreasing frequency in his time. He wrote: “For some do certainly and truly drive out devils, so that those who have thus been cleansed from evil spirits frequently both believe [in Christ] and join themselves to the Church. Others have foreknowledge of things to come: they see visions, and utter prophetic expressions. Others heal the sick by laying their hands upon them, and they are made whole. Calvinism teaches that humans are so utterly corrupted by sin that we are incapable of seeking God or choosing righteousness on our own. But what does the Bible actually say?
