It was an ever bigger challenge to get audiences to sympathize with a scarecrow who can't speak. But Patches journey is a universal one, albeit a bit more whimsical. We set out to produce a short about perseverance driven by the need for acceptance, hoping it resonated with all ages. This was my last USC produced short film and I couldn't be prouder of the result. I was fortunate to work with an immensely talented crew, made up of my classmates and friends. At the beginning of the story, we find Sophia (Kourtney Devinny) curled up with a teddy bear in the corner of a house meanwhile, her teenage sisters Betty and Julia are giving a party. The first thought that we have is that her siblings are doing something behind their parents' back, but as soon as Sophia let them know that they have arrived, they only comment between them if they may be drunk or sober. Meanwhile, Sophia is helping out her sisters cleaning the pool she hugs both a liquor bottle and her stuffed toy. This strong intro places us in a harsh environment for a little girl, normalized by her sisters and family. We quickly realize that her mother (Piercey Dalton), who has problems with alcohol, rarely spends time with her and stop smiling every time she sees her around the house. It’s like Sophia’s presence irritates her. The situations are bowling to a point in which Julia stands-up for her little sister, after she gets hurt after falling of a tree. Their mother doesn’t care enough to help her but instead, punish her for the behavior. In that moment is when Julia decides to tell Sophia the secret of her family. She’s being called “Sub” as a short form of substitute since she had a younger sister who pass away when she was a baby. Sophia, even with her young age, understands her mother’s grief, and a small change starts to happen. Sub is a short film that explores a hard and unusual topic, and overthrows the “perfect image” that society expects of a mother. We forget what is most important: our hearts. We forget that we are all made of the same clay and that we all need love. Loneliness is the number one disease of the XXI century. Millions of hearts die every day. And people just idly walk by. "The Dress” touches on the subject of rejection, loneliness and desire for love. Our heroine is a conduit of very universal emotions anyone can identify with. Julia is physically different from the rest of the society, but she is guided by the same needs and desires we all are. The world is full of lonely people who were doomed for this loneliness, even though, they do not deserve it. I hope our film will bring the audience’s attention to this issue and allow us to stop looking at ourselves only in the context of our looks, the shapes of our faces, our height, weight or other physical aspects. Siyue, a young girl finds herself strongly attached to her late grandmother with whom she shares one of the biggest gifts; a handmade legacy she’ll learn and inherit. The delicate ceramic craft she learns, while spending heartwarming instants with her grandma, is broken off by her sudden death. Amongst everything left in her house, Siyue keeps the Xun, the vessel flute, the material connection left, the last artifact she taught and confectioned for her granddaughter. At granny’s home, Siyue faces strange, moving moments when returning to her old, rusty but hearty workshop, recalling her cozy memories from the past and connecting them to the present, lonely studio. Unexpectedly, she encounters a curious creature sneaking around the workshop. After overcoming the sudden jump scare, Siyue builds a wholesome friendship with her fellow, until, by accident, he breaks the girl’s flute. Disappointed and heavy-hearted, Siyue, with some help from the bizarre creature, tries to fix the Xun while she resembles her grandma’s footsteps from the past, in a sweet and nostalgic way, just to find out her beloved flute is not going to work as before. Now she needs a little additional help from her mysterious friend, traveling to her deepest and most touching memories while she understands better her feelings and overcomes them by having new, amusing experiences. Kintsugi is a 15-minute short story that will embrace anyone having a deep, transcending relationship with a beloved, departed one. Her encounter with the mystical creature is just a reflection of her younger, joyful, lighthearted self from the past. Now, we see how Siyue is still learning, tried her best at fixing, and failed. We see how she’s growing up and now full of hope and acceptance she can enfold this part of life without losing her grandma’s wonderful connection. DIRECTOR STATEMENT I have always believed in the power of imagination; how it can be shaped into action and make this world a better place. My family and I planned to celebrate my grandfather’s 80th birthday with him in the Chinese countryside. He passed away very suddenly, shortly before the celebration. I never got the chance to say goodbye to him. Kintsugi is a tribute to my grandfather. I believe the people we have loved in our lives never truly leave us; they continue to live on in our hearts and our memories. With Kintsugi, I want to tell a story of loss and change but also of hope and acceptance. An intro with tensional music, technologic objects, a cell phone, and no-dialogues drives us to an instant curiosity about the plot of the short film.  Following Aeolus’ actions, he seems impatient, trying to escape from something or someone. Until we know the reason: he wants to run away from his ex-partner, Noah, a Time Traveler like himself. They had a good relationship master-student in the past. However, their association is being eclipsed by Aeolus choice. He has decided that saving his daughter’s life is more important than preserving the space-time continuum. Noah will try to persuade Aeolus that he’s making the wrong choices. But as the drive unfolds, we notice Aeolus’s motives are strong enough to even put his own life in danger as his ex-partner will not take chances with him anymore. A gun appears on screen in Noah’s hand. Will he use it? Aeolus will save his little girl? Short Film: A Good Man Is Hard To Be Directed by: Michael Yu Cast: Tim Hooper, Micah Fitzgerald An ordinary family faces a life-threatening situation when a group of escaped convicts steps into their family restaurant. In an almost supernatural setting, Sammy and his humble family maintain their modest diner in the middle of nowhere. In this mysterious and disturbing site, both Sammy and his wife discuss shocking and gruesome news they find on the paper. In midst of the moral debate, they find themselves in an unusual yet mysterious fight of words for what’s the right thing to do in one of the worst situations one can be in. Full of optimism, Sammy tries to engage in his simple but hearty job serving at the diner when a group of escaped convicts enter the family restaurant. What should they do? Sammy fights his inner gut about what’s the best thing to do against his true will and morals. In the middle of the dilemma, his family must act under pressure and define what’s good and what’s bad. As Sammy told his little boy: “always do what’s right”. In the middle of his innocence, he warns a couple that enters the diner with a condemning scream to run away. Virtue and purity were their unintentional last sentence. In the 10-minute short film “A Good Man Is Hard to Be”, the shocking performances and outstanding Southern Gothic cinematography and edition, hand-caries the audience to make them feel immersed in a unique sense western alike, full of tension and promises while the good man paradox will be put to a strong test. Both the music and sound editing create the bitterest of atmospheres that invade the viewer’s mind and senses. DIRECTOR STATEMENT Many things are easier said than done, and in the face of death, a person’s words may not hold much meaning at all. A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO BE explores this through a simple family living in the 1960s. Taking inspiration from Flannery O’Connor’s classic short story, “A Good Man Is Hard To Find”, this film has a unique opportunity in presenting itself as a suspenseful thriller under the Southern Gothic style, something not seen often today. Sammy is a good man by all accounts on the surface, but his simple way of living is disrupted when the Misfit arrives, bringing a dark and twisted view of the world with him. Pushed to the edge, Sammy and his family all act and react differently to the threat in ways that one would not expect. Through that, the film aims to tell a tense story of how a person’s actions hold more value in determining their character than words do. Could a dream keep alive his memories of what he holds dear? In a whole backtrace of his own memories and thoughts, John, a university professor begins one of the most painful journeys: losing his eyesight. While everything around him changes and evolves, he senses how the entirety of his world starts to tumble and slip out of control. John’s awareness about the change and his new reality strengthen as his little daughter, Rosalind grows up and the last remaining the memory of her young face, built now, only by the reachable sense, his caress. As John’s life seems to fade out, his family lives onward, trying to understand both heavy-hearted and in high spirits this new way of life. By losing his eyesight, John encounters extreme challenges that go above daily situations, instead, he faces his biggest fears: immense grief and abandonment: “I can be ignored, treated as if I did not exist” and at the same time, he learns to cope with what his wife calls, the gift, the other side of blindness to find his inner peace. This vigorous and inspirational short film embraces both faces of any degenerative illness, the rough and the positive one, while trying to internally fight a past one cannot change. John’s visions incarnate his now impossible wishes and deepest longings of his heart, while his daughter witnesses his arduous process. He sees himself as a valuable member of his enterprise, but for them, he’s only a replaceable “part” with no face and even less a mind or future to care.  In the desperation to safeguard his job, Mitchell will do unthinkable actions, even trying to finish with his life, images that will resonate in Justine’s head, who ironically, ends up being another victim of the system.  Tick Tock, written by Jarret Wright, is a short film that - in the words of director Morgan I.P. Fics - showcases the emotional complexity of human beings treated as “cogs” in the hierarchy of the capitalist corporate machine.
