He writes, “I have wished to express feelings aroused by my thoughts of the scenery and people of my native land, Australia.” Originally intending “Colonial Song” to be the first composition in a series of works called, “Sentimentals”, Grainger conveys a more intimate setting that has now become famous in the band world. One day while sitting at his foot-pumped reed organ, the reed that produces C, or “Do,” became stuck and Grainger decided to improvise over the static pitch. The resulting composition is an exercise in ensemble skills. A drone on the note C, or “Do,” can be heard constantly in contrast with intricate rhythmic texture and complex harmonies. Composer Omar Thomas states, “Driven by layers of rhythmic percussion (known as “the engine room”), “Caribana” seeks to recreate the experience of immersion in the carnival experience – from the elaborate beaded, feathered, and shimmering costumes, to the flatbed 18-wheeler trucks blasting Soca and Calypso through their massive speaker systems, followed by people dancing shoulder-to-shoulder to the driving and infectious music, waving flags of their respective Caribbean nations in perfect rhythm to the driving and infectious music. Arranger Larry D. Daehn, who adapted this piece from Grainger’s original score, describes the work as a collection of innovative harmonies and voice weavings being “lovingly woven” around a “sterling old-time tune”.
