This French house started in 1952 with the founder Gabby Aghion, who came to France from Egypt. When she got to Paris she found the couture houses rigid and the ready-to-wear not very fashionable. So she found a way to design more relaxed chic fashions that weren’t couture but had a level of detail and design that made them special. Gabby worked with numerous designers, but it was her collaboration and hiring of Karl Lagerfeld in 1964 that made the house develop a design signature. Lagerfeld went on to design for Chloe until 1987, and would return briefly from 92 to 96. Other designers at the helm included Martine Sitbon, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, Clare Waight Keller, and now Gabriella Hearst.
