The Spectraphon is a dual spectral oscillator designed by Tom Erbe of soundhack. It utilizes real-time spectral analysis and resynthesis to create new sounds from existing ones. However, it takes on a physical form more reminiscent of the classic analog dual complex oscillator, following the lineage of the Buchla 259 and the Make Noise DPO. This module represents a milestone for Make Noise as it is their first module built on their new digital hardware platform, making it their most powerful digital module to date. The code behind the Spectraphon was developed by Tom Erbe of soundhack, known for his expertise in sound manipulation and modulation. The Spectraphon features a dual digital VCO with eight simultaneous outputs, along with two audio inputs, two gate inputs, and ten CV inputs. This provides an abundance of possibilities for sound manipulation and modulation. It offers two main functions: Spectral Amplitude Modulation (SAM) and Spectral Array Oscillation (SAO). SAM creates spectral oscillations based on continuous analysis of the audio at the input. SAO, on the other hand, generates spectral oscillations using stored sets of spectra called Arrays, which are created in SAM mode. Each of the two VCOs in the Spectraphon can operate independently in SAO or SAM mode or in any combination of the two. The module also includes a high-definition internal Frequency Modulation Bus with easy access to harmonic ratios via the Tuning Beacon. Additionally, there are sub-oscillator/CV outputs that provide unique sub-oscillator shapes, envelope following, or clockable modulation sources. The Sine and Sub operate independent of FM Bus modulation. Furthermore, the Spectraphon offers follow and sync operations on Side B, facilitating ease of use in dual oscillator patches, tuned FM, hard sync sweeps, and more. The Make Noise Spectraphon is an innovative dual spectral oscillator that opens up a world of possibilities for sound exploration. With its real-time spectral analysis and resynthesis capabilities, combined with a wealth of modulation options, this module empowers musicians and sound designers to create unique and evolving sounds.
