As seen in this edition of the Thornapple River Rail Series, Q327 would take the rear of the train to Wells after previously taking the head end to Saugatuck. At Wells, they meet Q326, before a recrew arrives. Then, the new crew goes back to Saugatuck to collect the head end, double it all together at Wells and then finally resume the run for Chicagoland. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN - 21 AUG 2020 It's a fairly busy morning near the mouth of the St. Joseph River, as three trains, one commercial tug-barge and dozens of recreational boaters cross paths. The CSX swing bridge provides a focal point for the action, closing off the waterway to most watercraft for each train. Then, when the cement barge goes to leave, its like threading a needle as the vessel slowly inches through the narrow opening. Recrewed by D802 at Grand Junction, we find them rolling through the hills north of Fennville, on descent to the Kalamazoo River. Next, we catch them rolling through the control point at East End Saugatuck, after summiting the hill from the Kalamazoo River. They pick up speed as the tonnage crests the hill, making way for Holland. Finally, our last spot at on the east end of the sag at Vriesland. In ancient times, this was the Grand River Valley, but the river has since been re-routed to Grand Haven by the immense power of glaciers in the last ice age. Either way, the sag remains, and can be a train-handling challenge for engineers through here. While the large steel rails of today’s railroads are hardy and can last for decades, over time they are surface worn by passing trains, and are subjected to stress and strain which precipitates in the formation of metal fatigue and internal cracking. While rail grinding does extend the life of the rail, eventually it becomes more cost effective to swap it out for new steel. Special thanks to this crew for graciously allowing me to film their work and be good sports about it. It isn’t always easy working in front of an unknown camera lens, but I think this process is so neat and worth sharing with others. Description: On February 28, 2022, we're at the west end of 10th Street in Michigan City for Train #106, which was the last revenue passenger move through the street running in Michigan City. After this train reached Dune Park, the Line & Signal department would shut off the power to the catenary and signals between CP 33.0 and CP 43.0, and contractor Walsh-Herzog (a joint venture) would begin the railroad's massive Double Track Northwest Indiana Project. Slated for completion by early 2024, the DTNWI project will double-track the line from the current end-of-Double Track at CP 58.1 in Gary, to the new CP 33.4 (Maple Street) in Michigan City. As a part of the project, the legendary streetrunning in Michigan City will be eliminated. Both new mains will be located on a new right-of-way on the South Side of 10th Street, and on 11th Street, the westbound lane will permanently close to create a new separate right-of-way there. Subscribe to the Thornapple River Rail Series to follow along with progress on the DTNWI project, and we'll be sure to have a feature-length documentary on the subject once the project wraps up in a few years. </video> <video> TRRS 541: Arthur M Anderson Loading Iron Ore Fines @ LS&I Description: MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN - 20 Oct 2019 The Arthur M Anderson is perhaps the most well-known ship currently sailing the Great Lakes, famed for her role in the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. She was the last ship to have radio and radar contact with the doomed ore carrier during that November Gale in 1975. Today the Anderson is owned by Canadian National’s Great Lakes Fleet subsidiary, and thus is a regular for the ore docks of Minnesota, rarely calling at the LS&I. She’s here today to load iron ore chips or "fines" as they’re sometimes known, a low-grade product consisting of pellets dropped and then reclaimed along the railroad, or which fail to meet size specifications at the mine during the pelletizing process. With dozens of lines radiating out of the city-on-the-lake, Chicago is the most important railway hub in the world! While Chicago holds this title largely thanks to the huge volumes of freight traffic being moved into, out of and through the city, it also remains a passenger rail hub, including most of Amtrak's long-distance intercity services and the commuter network known as Metra. Heading west out of the dense urban core, BNSF's Chicago Subdivision has no fewer than three tracks all the way to the distant suburb of Aurora. With 97 Metra trains on the pre-pandemic timetable, plus dozens of repositioning moves and plenty of BNSF freight traffic mixed in, this stretch of railroad has long been known as the "Racetrack" for its ability to run train after train, often side-by-side. In this edition of the Thornapple River Rail Series, we'll document this incredible railroad as it has never been done before, including scenes from all 26 stations, along with many more points in between. Our first train is a westbound passenger under the wire, followed by Amtrak's 365 rumbling over the South Shore at the 10th Street Interlocking. Then, a westbound South Shore freight makes way for Bailly, and he is shortly upon us at 10th Street. Afterwards, we catch back up to him at Tamarack for the meet with another passenger train, before we catch them one last time rolling by the station at Dune Park.
