For most of my early days of fishing, I thought there was a different class of fish in some of my favorite waters that I simply never encountered. And I liked to think that if I fished certain ways at certain times, I would finally catch those fish. But many years later, after more experience and after finally fishing all of the ways that are supposed to help you find the biggest fish — night fishing, streamer fishing, etc. — I also met many like minded anglers and became friends with enough obsessed fishermen whose stories and accounts I could trust. And I realized, no one catches big trout out of some of these waters. Why do some rivers hold big trout? This is a topic that has come up between all of us on long drives, around the tailgate, and on long walks along the riverbank. Why is it that some rivers just do not have any size to the fish, and then, maybe just the next valley over, not only is the average size larger, but the top tier fish is bigger too? But as the seasons change, so do the habits of trout. This film focuses on the shift between late fall to early winter. The brown trout spawn is over. The water is getting colder. Trout respond by feeding more in some places and less in others. The keys to fishing this transition season are in finding fishy water and adapting the tactics to suit the moment. As with any season, conditions and fish habits change quickly, and it's our challenge to adapt to the circumstances. On one of the toughest days of this early winter, I brought out the cameras. Dom </video> <video> The Jerk Strip - An Essential Streamer Presentation Description: Moving the fly with the rod tip and not just the line hand is a fundamental skill that opens up so many presentations that bring trout to a streamer. Almost two decades ago, I bought Kelly Galloup’s first streamer book, and it changed the way I thought about moving a streamer. Now, all these years later, the jerk strip isn’t just one way to move the streamer. It’s a technique for using both hands, in concert, and for truly animating a streamer in every way imaginable. The jerk strip is critical for any serious streamer angler. It’s a must-have skill for animating the fly -- for selling the streamer to a fish. And it’s the baseline for what I think of as a jig strip, a twitch strip, a glide strip, a head flip and twitch, a lane change, and much more. At its core, the jerk strip is a hand off from left to right -- it’s about moving the fly with the rod tip and then recovering with the line hand. As much as we all love fishing dry flies and nymphs, nothing compares to actively fishing streamers and watching trout attack the fly. In early November, I found good streamer action in some favorite water. The takes were spotty enough that I had to work for them, but frequent enough that I could learn the preferences of the trout and dial in a presentation.
