Make sure to hit that, there Subscribe button for all the best fly fishing content! <video> CHEESMAN CANYON UPDATE // 2 Weeks After the Flash Flood Description: Around 4 PM on July 31st, 2023, an afternoon storm dropped approximately 2.5 inches of rain into the canyon. This rain led to a flash flood event where flows in the canyon increased from 239 cfs to 630 cfs in very short order. As a result of this flash flood event, significant amounts of sediment and debris were transported downslope in the canyon and into the South Platte itself. All in all, approximately 20 notable sediment slides have been documented in the canyon. The sediment slides are primarily composed of decomposed granite gravel. Following the rain event, Denver Water dropped flows to 75 cfs because of an excess of water in the system. Currently flows have been bumped back up to 172 cfs. We've received quite a few inquiries about the state of Cheesman Canyon following the flash flood. There is a lot of concern about the condition of the fishery and the trail and rightfully so. The canyon is an amazing fishery to have in our backyard and it's been fishing extremely well in recent years. So, earlier this week, I hiked into the canyon (camera in hand) to document the condition of Gill Trail and the South Platte through Cheesman Canyon. Alec designed this fly during his time guiding in the Seychelles. While it was designed for those Indo-Pacific flats fish, it's a great pattern for any saltwater fishery that has bonefish or permit that are feeding on shrimp or large prawn. A versatile fly, Alec likes the Polar Prawn in sizes 2, 4, and 6. Alec is also the architect behind the famous Aphlexo Crab. Traditionally, in the world of flats fishing, to pull off a Grand Slam requires that the angler catches a tarpon, permit, and bonefish all over the course of one day on the water. Anyone who has spent time on the front of a flats skiff knows that accomplishing the Grand Slam is no small feat and it requires every bit of skill and luck an angler muster. Back in October, everyone's fly fishing mentor Tom Rosenbauer, the host of the Orvis Fly Fishing podcast - among many other things, was making the rounds on the Front Range and we were able to schedule a day on the water with the legend himself. An honor to say the least. Here was the catch - Tom only had a couple of hours to get out with a speaking engagement later in the day. Mr. Rosenbauer - who is no stranger to fly fishing for carp - wanted to check a Denver South Platte carp off his list. Luckily, our own Rick Mikesell is a certified DSP junkie and knows the ways of the common carp (as well as the stocking history - just ask him about it). As our day on the water neared, it became painfully clear that the first snowstorm of the season was going to make its appearance the very same day. So, it was time to pivot. We devised the elusive DSP Slush Slam. What does the DSP Slush Slam entail? An angler must catch a common carp, white sucker and rainbow trout out of the Denver South Platte during a winter storm. What makes the DSP so challenging? Well, carp are a tough enough quarry when water temperatures and sunlight are more favorable. Rainbow trout are only seasonally catchable in the DSP. The white sucker, well this native species is becoming pickier and pickier after we threatened to change our name to SUCKERS FLY FISHING. Here was our attempt at achieving the DSP Slush Slam with the one and only Tom Rosenbauer. We hope you enjoy this video. Fall is on its way out and winter will be readily stepping in for a spell. That means we get a nice mix of the two when it comes to fly fishing. November means everyone's favorite blue-winged olives and streamers will be waning and eventually making way for the winter midge and attractor game. Banker hours are in full effect as the days get shorter. That means productive fishing will tend to be packed into the hours between late morning and afternoon, as the water warms up and fish become their most active. More than any other season, winter is the perfect time to slow down and be deliberate. Concentrate on presentation and rigging, as fish will be less forgiving when it comes to a wayward drift. If you find a fish, chances are there will be plenty of fish to be caught in the same water type over the course of the day. Get out and enjoy this late fall and early winter fishing! For those of us who are looking to avoid seasonal depression, it should be noted that we have turned the corner from losing sunlight to gaining sunlight. That's right! Days are getting longer as we progress through January and into the spring. While midges will be the primary food this month, fish can still be had on attractors, blue-winged olives, eggs, and streamers when conditions are right.
