Babies being cared for at home or any other area of the maternity unit should follow the guidance of their caregiver including advice from UNICEF baby friendly and NHS safe sleeping advice. Information about the video: How painful are common hospital procedures for babies and how can parents help to reduce it? This simple three-step video guides parents and staff in the neonatal unit or NICU to help your baby deal with the pain from procedures more effectively. The guide was created because it is not always easy to predict how painful procedures are and how babies might react. The guide helps us to PREPARE and SUPPORT babies during necessary yet painful procedures with the long-term aim to PROTECT babies developing brains from the effects of pain. Based on research, a colour chart displays the anticipated pain of needle and tube-related procedures like heel lance, venous cannula, feeding tube through the nose, or suctioning. It recommends a family-integrated approach to pain management where the parent holds baby close while the nurse or doctor makes the procedure as easy on the baby as possible. Parents can provide skin-to-skin or breastfeeding, holding, facilitated tucking plus the addition of swaddling, soother, and breastmilk, or a sweet solution. By combining several methods to maximise comfort, we can suit babies’ changing needs throughout their hospital journey and after discharge, for example, when receiving vaccinations in the doctor’s office. How we came up with the guide: The anticipated pain of common procedures was based on the findings of a systematic review of babies’ pain scores that were observed during clinically necessary painful procedures: https://doi.org/10.1097/j.pain.0000000000001814 Babies participated in published randomised controlled trials for interventions to reduce pain and were assigned in the control groups where they stayed in the cot or nest. We have put together the babies’ pain scores from these studies to come up with a common estimate for each procedure. The recommendations consist mainly of physical measures based on research as there is not a lot of pain medications available yet for the very young babies. To make the findings accessible to everyone, a research team at University College London and staff and parents at the neonatal unit of the University College London Hospital worked together to come up with this easy-to-use, simple guide. Funding for this project was provided by the Medical Research Foundation’s Changing Policy and Practice Award.
