Speaking at its launch event: UCD President, Professor Orla Feely; UCD Registrar, Deputy President and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Professor Colin Scott; UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact, Professor Katharine Robson-Brown; UCD Vice-President for Strategy and External Engagement, Triona McCormack; and Chair of the UCD Governing Authority, Mike Beary. Under the new strategy, Ireland’s largest and most influential university will grow the range of opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and skills and realise their potential in areas also linked to Ireland’s future societal and economic success, including significant new provision in lifelong learning and skills development. UCD will also expand cross-cutting research in areas of excellence and impact within the university, such as artificial intelligence, One Health, sustainability and research for policy, and it will expand its commitment to Ireland’s national culture, heritage and language. Hello a chairde, and welcome to episode 40 of Blúiríní Béaloidis, the podcast from the National Folklore Collection. It would be remiss of me not to commence this episode of the podcast with long, grovelling apologies concerning the absence of signs of life regarding the series over the last year and a half. The good news is that the podcast still exists, the work of the NFC continues apace, and the bad news, well… there is no bad news really; just the reality of one individuals less-than-perfect attempts at keeping a variety of plates spinning while kicking cans down the road. Forgive me please! Forty episodes ago, we commenced our wanderings through the folklore furrow by asking 'what is folklore?' Now, having traversed some of the way together, we will stop to consider, well, what is a folklore archive? Folklore archives, in actively setting out to document the traditional customs, practices and memories of ‘ordinary people’, have tended to develop on the margins of the professional archival world. They offer unique cases for archival research, as the systems of classification and description they employ, along with the impulses that motivate them, pose questions regarding the relevance of formal archival ideas (which often developed in response to the needs or large and powerful government bureaucracies). In this episode we will explore the role and nature of archives generally, and will consider the form and nature of the folklore archive specifically. We'll hear from the visionary individuals who established the folklore archive in Ireland, will explore Ireland's troubled relationship with archives, look at the systems of classification and description which are employed in folklore archives, and consider what use this material offers us in these troubled times. The guest speakers at the lecture were Israel Olatunde, UCD Sportsperson of the Year 2023; Kerri Rowen, UCD Medicine Student of the Year 2023; and Stiofán Ó Briain, Poet and PhD student in Modern Irish at UCD. -- Professor Orla Feely was appointed as President of University College Dublin on 1 May 2023. Prior to this, she was UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact from 2014 to 2023. A professor of Electronic Engineering, she holds a BE degree from UCD and MS and PhD degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, where her PhD thesis won the DJ Sakrison Memorial Prize for outstanding and innovative research. While at UC Berkeley, she also won the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award. Her research is in the area of nonlinear circuits and systems, and she has been awarded research grants and prizes from a number of national, international and industry sources. Professor Feely is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Engineers Ireland and the Irish Academy of Engineering. She has served as President of Engineers Ireland and as Chair of the Irish Research Council, the EU Advisory Group on Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions and the IEEE Technical Committee on Nonlinear Circuits and Systems. She has also served as Board Member and Deputy Chair of the Higher Education Authority in Ireland, as Vice-President for Resources and Treasurer of CESAER (the Conference of European Schools of Advanced Engineering Education and Research), and as a member of a number of Editorial Boards. Professor Feely is a member of the judging panels for the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, one of the largest and most successful school science fairs in the world, and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. </video> <video> Scientists identify genes associated with ‘roaring’ horse disorder that affects race performance Description: 🏇🔬 Scientists identify genes associated with ‘roaring’ horse disorder that affects race performance. Hailed as a breakthrough in combating the critical equine performance-limiting disorder Recurrent Laryngeal Neuropathy (RLN), the discovery will enable the development of a genetic test to identify horses with a 3-times higher risk of developing the disease. The new findings have been published in the peer-reviewed journal Equine Veterinary Journal. Often referred to as laryngeal hemiplegia or ‘roaring’, this disease affects up to 18% of horses by acting on the muscles in their upper airways, resulting in reduced airflow and increased work of breathing during exercise. RLN is a major contributor to poor performance in Thoroughbred racehorses and while pre-purchase examinations which include endoscopic examination (‘scoping’) of the upper respiratory tract can help to identify horses that have the disease, studies have shown that scoping young horses at rest can fail to detect the disease or assess if it will occur in the future. Working with a world-leading Thoroughbred racehorse training yard, and with funding from Research Ireland, researchers at University College Dublin and Equinome examined more than 200 horses-in-training using gold-standard methodologies for diagnosing RLN, including a combined approach of resting and overground exercising upper airway endoscopy as well as laryngeal ultrasounds. Using DNA technologies, they found a set of genetic markers associated with the disease. “Accurately diagnosing disease using gold-standard methodologies is one of the most important factors in a genetic study,” said project lead Lisa Katz, UCD Professor in Equine Internal Medicine. “Following years of intensive veterinary examination of the horses, it is extremely rewarding to see our research come to fruition.” UCD Professor in Equine Genomics and Chief Science Officer at Equinome, Emmeline Hill said the new findings would “lay the groundwork for the development of a genetic test to improve the welfare of horses that have a genetic predisposition to the disease. “As well as identifying horses with an increased risk of disease, this new information could also inform breeding guidance to reduce the incidence of the disease and provide targets for new therapies.” Professor Katz added: “Understanding the genetic risk of your horse for roaring can help with early intervention and management.
