This is located in the third building at the National Museum of the USAF. </video> <video> McDonnell Douglas F-15 Streak Eagle Description: The F-15 is a twin engine, high-performance, all-weather air superiority fighter. First flown in July 1972, the Eagle entered the USAF inventory in November 1974. It was the first U.S. fighter to have engine thrust greater than the normal weight of the aircraft, allowing it to accelerate while in a vertical climb. This, combined with low aircraft weight to wing area, makes the Eagle very highly maneuverable. The Eagle was produced in both single-seat and two-seat versions. The museum's single-seat F15A, nicknamed "Streak Eagle," broke eight time-to-climb world records between Jan. 16 and Feb. 1, 1975. In setting the last of the eight records, it reached an altitude of 98,425 feet just 3 minutes, 27.8 seconds from brake release at takeoff and "coasted" to nearly 103,000 feet before descending. It was flown in its natural metal finish to reduce weight for the record-setting flights. To protect it from corrosion, McDonnell Douglas Corp. has since painted it in the gray color scheme of most operational F-15s. "Streak Eagle" is an early preproduction aircraft. Differences in internal structure and systems operation made it too costly to return to operational service. The Soviet-designed Su-27 all-weather fighter-interceptor was created to counter the American McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. This two-seat trainer version, designated Su-27UB, entered USSR service in 1986 and still flies with Russian forces and other nations. Its NATO name is Flanker-C. The jet’s primary mission is advanced pilot training, but it has all the combat capability of other Su-27s. The instructor sits in the aft cockpit, and the plane has dual controls, but a single pilot can fly it from the front seat. Su-27s have been versatile testbeds leading to more advanced combat aircraft including the Russian Su-30SM and Su-35S used in the Russia-Ukraine war. The Flanker-C on display was built in 1989. It served first in the Soviet Navy and then the Ukrainian Air Force after the Soviet Union collapsed. In 2008, Ukraine sold the demilitarized jet to a US company, and in 2011 the US Air Force bought it. The Su-27UB arrived at the Museum in 2023. Special thanks to your entire team for visiting the museum! @fortknoxky 10/26/2024 US Army </video> <video> Lieutenant Colonel William Jones III-Medal of Honor Mission Description: On September 1, 1968, Lieutenant Colonel William Jones III, flying A-1H, serial number 52-139738, led a group of rescue helicopters to recover a downed pilot who ejected over North Vietnam during the Southeast Asia War. As the on-scene commander, Lt Col Jones flew multiple low-level passes near a well-defended enemy supply road in an effort to locate the downed crewman. On one pass, enemy fire hit Jones’ Skyraider which caused an explosion under the aircraft, filling his cockpit with smoke. Undeterred by the damage, Lt Col Jones continued the search. Jones later located the downed crewman near a large rock formation; however, enemy troops were positioned near the top and firing anti-aircraft artillery at Jones. For fear of hitting the downed crewman on the first pass, Jones made two additional passes attacking the enemy with accurate fire. During his second pass, Jones’ aircraft was once again hit, this time igniting the rocket on the ejection system, setting his cockpit ablaze. Jettisoning the canopy, Lt Col Jones was unable to eject from the aircraft due to the damage. As the fire’s intensity increased, Jones pulled his aircraft in a climb to attempt to transmit the location of the crewman, only to find that his radio transmitter was inoperative. Despite severe burns, Jones flew his aircraft forty minutes back to his base in Thailand. Successfully landing his severely damaged aircraft, Lt Col Jones relayed the position of the downed crewman before accepting medical treatment. The rescue team successfully recovered the downed crewman later that day. For these actions, taken with complete disregard for his own injuries, Lt Col Jones was awarded the Medal of Honor. Unfortunately, Jones, recently promoted to Colonel, died in a private aircraft accident prior to being presented with the medal. </video> <video> Douglas X-3 Stiletto #aircraftmuseum #aviation #avgeek #shorts Description: The twin-turbojet X-3, the only one built, was designed to test sustained flight at twice the speed of sound. It also explored the use of very short wings and titanium airframe construction. Engine development difficulties forced the use of lower-powered engines than originally planned, prohibiting the X-3 from achieving its Mach 2 design potential. Even so, data gained from the X-3 program greatly benefited the F-104, X-15, SR-71 and other high performance aircraft. The X-3 made its first test flight at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., in October 1952. The X-3 was transferred to the museum in 1956. The aircraft on display (S/N 91-4003) was one of nine F-22s built for Engineering, Manufacture and Development (EMD) testing, and it rolled off the Lockheed Martin assembly line in Georgia on May 22, 1999. Assigned to the 412th Test Wing at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., the aircraft made its first flight on March 6, 2000. After completing its phase in the test program, this aircraft came to the museum in January 2007. It is painted to represent an F-22A flown by the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Va. In its 38 flights, the Bird of Prey tested ways to make aircraft less observable to the eye and to radar. It also validated new ways to design and build aircraft using large single-piece composite structures, "virtual reality" computerized design and assembly, and disposable tooling. The event featured candy stations, Halloween balloons, face paint, and a magician. We want to have a special incentive to get people to the museum that aren’t always here. That includes younger children or people who don't have a particular interest in the Air Force. But it's a good opportunity to bring them in, and while they're here maybe they learn a little something and want to come back and explore more of the museum. </video> <video> Martin X-24A(Cockpit Views) Description: This aircraft represents the Martin (now Lockheed Martin) X-24A, which the U.S. Air Force and NASA flew to study flight characteristics and maneuverability of “lifting bodies.” A lifting body is a fixed-wing air or spacecraft -- such as the space shuttle -- in which the body itself produces lift. The X-24A paved the way for the space shuttle by showing that a lifting body could glide through the atmosphere and land on Earth like an airplane. X-24 flights focused on the last stage of re-entry from space, with pilots flying lifting bodies at speeds of around 1,000 mph and altitudes of around 70,000 feet. Smaller unmanned vehicles with similar shapes conducted tests at higher speeds and altitudes. The X-24A made 12 gliding tests in 1969 and 1970, dropped from a NASA modified B-52. Twenty-eight powered flights followed in 1970 and 1971. Flights typically lasted under eight minutes, with a 2.5 minute rocket burn followed by a 5 minute glide to landing. One of the last X-24A flights simulated a space shuttle landing approach from about 71,400 feet, and another featured the aircraft reaching Mach 1.6, its fastest speed. The aircraft on display was originally the jet-powered Martin SV-5J, a derivative of the X-24A built for flight training. It was never flown. For display purposes, the SV-5J has been modified to represent the X-24A. Martin donated it to the museum in 1971. In 1973 the actual X-24A was converted into the X-24B on display.
