WeatherWatch.co.nz / RuralWeather.co.nz / NZ App <video> Australia: Tracking downpours & southerly change, possible TC in WA Description: Rain and showers are forecast in all states and territories this week but it’s a messy set-up with a few moving parts. Heat is off and on for the southern half of the country with a southerly and then easterly change moving in this week as high pressure moves in to the south, and low pressure deepens over NSW and out over the Tasman Sea. There’s also some risk of a tropical cyclone forming in northern WA and near the Top End this weekend. It’s not locked in yet - we cover it today but will have more details in our Thursday update. We track the big picture shaping Australia’s weather through until this Sunday. </video> <video> New Zealand weather forecast to January 1, 2025 Description: The unsettled almost spring-like pattern over NZ continues for the rest of December and looks to ease as we kick of January 2025. High pressure zones are in the mix but they aren’t overly powerful or dominant. Low pressure zones are still driving in windy and wet periods for NZ - along with thunderstorms from time to time. We track NZ’s weather for the end of 2024 and start of 2025. Our next video update will be on Monday. Description: Australia’s Christmas Day weather doesn’t look too bad for most who are wanting a calm and sunny day with the majority of Australians looking to have a dry and settled Christmas Day - and week leading up to it. We break down the wind, rain and temperature drops as we head into Christmas Day. This forecast isn’t yet 100% locked in this far out - Don’t worry - we’re back again on Monday to update it all again and hopefully lock in more detail for you. </video> <video> Australia weather to Sunday: Qld rain, Vic wind + big picture nationwide Description: Wet weather is coming for Queensland over the next week but sadly not in Victoria for the Grampians bush fire. In fact dry, hot and sometimes windy weather will dominate the lower half of the continent this week, driving in windy easterlies from coast to coast which causes cloud and wet weather for coastal eastern Qld and NSW, but drier inland and to the south for Vic and SA. WA has windy weather at times from the east, boosting temperatures again. But the top half of WA and NT isn’t too stormy - just a few thunderstorms and isolated downpours here and there. It’s really appreciated by us! </video> <video> Australia: Cooler for some, windier for others - we track the highs & lows Description: We have Australia’s 7 Day Rainfall outlook + we explain why some regions in the south and east are experiencing such changeable weather with temperature drops and spikes, and windy at times too. Further northwards into the tropics it’s still remarkably quiet but we do see the chance of a tropical cyclone forming offshore from WA and the chance of heavy rain near Darwin and Katherine. TAS is one of the more settled places in the week ahead as high pressure drops further southwards. </video> <video> NZ’s weather to the middle of January 2025 Description: In our final video of 2024 we take a look at the upcoming two week weather as a cooler, slightly windier set-up locks itself in for Week 1. Week 2 may be even more settled as air pressure continues to rise. But showers, thunderstorms and occasionally windy weather is all in the mix - along with a few more southerly changes. This is certainly no a muggy start to summer with airflows mostly coming in from south of the country. We also take a look at 11 day upcoming rainfall around NZ, Australia, the South Pacific and the Southern Ocean, and an animation showing the likely forecast next week in the NZ area. For campers this forecast may not be ideal, although it’s not raining every day some may find the windier weather frustrating - especially around the North Island. There are two southerly changes for NZ this week - and no high pressure coming in over us. In fact,we’re stuck between high and low pressure for another week which is why it’s not overly settled. </video> <video> Australia weather forecast to January 1, 2025 Description: Large dry areas dominate Australia over the next week with some thunderstorms in the mix. We talk about the increased bush fire risk in VIC and NSW in particular as some windy and dry weather is forecast there. We tracks the highs and lows, the wet and dry as we end 2024 and kick off 2025. Certainly a switch from windy southerlies and westerlies looks to be replaced by windy easterlies as high pressure grows south of NZ and low pressure north of NZ - putting a easterly “squash zone” over the country late week or this weekend. </video> <video> Australia’s Christmas Day weather + forecast to Sunday Description: This is likely our quietest week of weather since making these Australian videos over the past 15 months with a remarkably dry set-up for many places over the coming week. We track where the heat and cool changes are and where any potential showers and thunderstorms may be. We have another video update out on Friday later this week with no video on Thursday due to Boxing Day. </video> <video> NZ’s weather forecast through to Boxing Day Description: Low pressure is looming next week for Christmas Day - but that doesn’t mean rain for all, with large dry areas expected. The precise timing of when the rain arrives is still being locked in - so keep an eye on your local forecast for more updates over the weekend. By Boxing Day that low pressure zone is likely to cross NZ and fall apart - bringing a wet and windy (and cooler) south to south-west flow by Thursday and Friday next week - but that may well be ahead of a large, dry, area of high pressure. We give you the Big Picture forecast including what’s going on south of NZ near Antarctica and also an update on the tropics directly north of NZ. </video> <video> NZ: Low pressure is growing, what this means for NZ next week Description: Warmer air is slowing moving down the country over the days ahead and should affect most of NZ by next week as low pressure moves in from the Tasman Sea. High pressure is now centred more south of NZ and that encourages milder airflows and low pressure further northwards, although it also means southern NZ may get some cold snaps in the weeks ahead. We track the lows, highs and wet/dry weather for the next week ahead. </video> <video> NZ’s 8 day weather, out to New Year’s Eve Description: We have the latest forecast on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, the final weekend of December and the New Year’s Eve. There is a mix of low pressure with wet weather and large dry zones. It’s still a spring-like pattern with temperature fluctuations - especially in the South Island. The upcoming wet weather is actually normal for this time of year with rainfall totals either normal for late December, or still drier than normal. We track the likely set-up on Christmas Day, where the worst weather will be for campers - and of course, when the next area of settled weather will be. We have another video update out on Tuesday afternoon (Christmas Eve). </video> <video> 7 Day: Gales & some rain for northern NZ, cooler in the east Description: Low pressure around the north of NZ means windy weather is kicking in from today through to Tuesday, in particular the top third of the North Island. If you’re camping be prepared for some windy weather with gales and possibly even severe easterly gales in the forecast. The further down the country you go the cooler those easterlies are with below normal temperatures by day for many eastern places from Gisborne to Dunedin. But many regions are leaning drier than average over the next week despite the showers - but the top of the North Island and north-east of the North Island (Northland to East Cape) looks to lean wetter.
