He held a front-row seat during the development of the Sustainable Development Goals, championing the role of energy as the “golden thread” to the SDGs. He is also a two-term former Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Dr. Yumkella obtained his advanced degrees from Cornell University and the U of Illinois. Dr. Yumkella was born in Sierra Leone and he resides there now as an agricultural economist and politician. Teachers were trained in the curriculum which culminates in having students assemble Solar Suitcases and LED lighting systems that will be deployed to energy scarce schools and refugee settlements in Kenya and Uganda. </video> <video> Lighting the World: Samburu, Kenya (We Share Solar 2023) Description: Women in Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship (WISEe) install We Share Solar Suitcases to light and power rural schools in Samburu County, Kenya that had no electricity. These Solar Suitcases were built by students at Hopkins West Junior High School in Minnesota as part of a service learning STEM project. University of Minnesota student, Irina Kornberg, organized the fundraising efforts to sponsor 10 systems to be installed in schools within the Samburu wildlife conservation community.
