But the cheetah population has been decreasing, a decline fuelled by human-wildlife conflict which manifests itself through retaliatory killings, poisonings and illegal killing for trade. Unsustainable rangeland management, habitat loss and fragmentation have also led to loss of prey, leaving cheetahs vulnerable. The IUCN lists cheetahs as vulnerable with 6,517 mature individuals globally as of 2021. A third of the global cheetah population is found in Eastern Africa in 15 sub-populations, and only one of those subpopulations has more than 200 mature individuals. That is how rare cheetahs have become. This is why the sighting of the Cheetah ‘super-mom” with five healthy cubs in Amboseli, Kenya, is such a rarity and good news. The trees are a rich source of protein for livestock and have also been exploited for timber and wood fuel but they are facing overexploitation. With support from WWF-Kenya's Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA), the women have adopted the use of acacia seed banks, a local climate solution, to address climate change. This includes fishers, fish traders, processors, and their families, as well as those involved in ancillary activities related to the fisheries sector. Small-scale fisheries are crucial for livelihoods, food security, and economic sustenance in many coastal and inland communities across the country. Scaling up initiatives in coastal Kenya to support small-scale fisheries requires a multi-faceted approach that includes community engagement, policy support, capacity building, financial investment, and technological innovation. Strengthening local institutions and involving communities in decision-making through participatory management frameworks can ensure that initiatives are tailored to specific needs. Advocating for supportive policies and developing regulatory frameworks that prevent overfishing are essential for long-term sustainability. Training programs, like the Trainers of Trainers model, and increased awareness about sustainable fishing practices can enhance local capacities. Expanding access to financial services through microfinance and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), as well as leveraging public-private partnerships, can mobilize resources for investment in better equipment and practices. Technological innovations, such as cold storage facilities and advanced data collection systems, can reduce post-harvest losses and inform management decisions. These are the initiatives that WWF-Kenya supported with funding from the European Union-funded K-ECOFISH project. </video> <video> Saving Kisumu's most important river | Journey of Water Description: River Kibos supplies 60% of the water that Kisumu City residents use. Rehabilitating and protecting its catchment area is vital for the river's sustainability and for the strengthening of the climate resilience of the communities that depend on it along its course. This is why in 2024 the Journey of Water campaign brought stakeholders together to address the challenges River Kibos faces, culminating in commitments by stakeholders and the three counties that share the river to rehabilitate and restore it. The Journey of Water campaign is an initiative of the Catchment to Tap (C2T) project which is implemented by WWF-Kenya in partnership with the World Waternet (WWn), VEI and Acacia Water, local partners KEWASNET and CIWAB-Egerton University. They play a vital role in local economies and food security, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.
