Ganweriwala is situated near the Indian border on the dry riverbed of the Ghaggar-Hakra, now part of a vast desert. It is spread over 80 hectares and comparable in size with the largest sites of the Indus Valley Civilization. TThe Cholistan Desert also locally known as Rohi is large in the southern part of Punjab, Pakistan that forms part of the Greater Thar Desert, which extends to Sindh province and the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is one of two large deserts in Punjab. Sarwahi Fort was one of the 47 forts of the ancient Cholistan Desert. This old mound of Sarwahi has a rich history to its credit. Situated about one mile towards East from the Karachi-Lahore highway near Sanjarpur, it was a fairly high fort and was considered to be one of the six unconquerable fortresses of Rai Sihasi II. Gen. Cunningham regarded it as Sogdi of Greek writers. According to Syed Noor Ali Zamin Hussaini, it was also a river port and center of administration of the upper Sindh, Mr. David Ross who visited this mound in 1881 AD believes that it must have been named after its ruler Severai who was a son of a ruler Sateel Rai. The mound of the fort is 50 ft. in height and has been victim of adventurers who dug it out every time in search of old coins and other relics of the ancient past. According to historical sources, in the reign of Raja Severai, four Arab preachers of Islam namely Haji Mohammad Iraqi, Sheikh Tajuddin Shaheed, Sultan Mohammad Barkati and Sheikh Aziz also arrived here and took the fort from the said Raja but all except Sheikh Aziz Khatib were murdered. Shrines of the four saints are situated on the said mound. Haji Mohammad Iraqi Shaheed is said to be a cousin of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani of Baghdad and was a poet of distinction. The famous Mendra, the lover of Mumil who is said to have been a contemporary of Hamir Sumra of Pattan was Chief of Sarvahi which shows that the place perhaps formed a capital to a small principality in those times. The mound has never been excavated for archaeological purposes. Some balls of burnt mud about the size of a man's head were once found in the ruins which are supposed to have been used as military hardware. It is a concentrated product of cane juice and often date or palm sap without separation of the molasses and crystals, and can vary from golden brown to dark brown in color. It contains up to 50% sucrose, up to 20% invert sugars, and up to 20% moisture, with the remainder made up of other insoluble matter, such as wood ash, proteins, and bagasse fibers. Jaggery is very similar to muscovado, an important sweetener in Portuguese, British and French cuisine. The Kenyan Sukari ngutu/nguru has no fiber; it is dark and is made from sugarcane and also sometimes extracted from palm tree. Historically, the sugarcane cultivators used crushers that were powered by oxen, but all modern crushers are power-driven. These crushers are placed in fields near the sugarcane plants. The cut and cleaned sugarcane is crushed and the extracted cane juice is collected in a large vessel. A quantity of the juice is transferred to a smaller vessel for heating in a furnace. The vessel is heated for about an hour. Dried wood pulp from the crushed sugarcane is traditionally used as fuel for the furnace. While boiling the juice, lime is added to it so that all the wood particles rise to the top of the juice in a froth, which is skimmed off. Finally, the juice is thickened. The resulting thick liquid is about one-third of the original volume. This hot liquid is golden in color. It is stirred continuously and lifted with a spatula to observe whether it forms a thread or drips while falling. If it forms many threads, it has completely thickened. It is poured into a shallow flat-bottomed pan to cool and solidify. The pan is extremely large to allow only a thin coat of this hot liquid to form at its bottom, so as to increase the surface area for quick evaporation and cooling. After cooling, the jaggery becomes a soft solid that is then molded into the desired shape. The quality of jaggery is judged by its color; dark brown means it was not clarified during the making, or the sugarcane juice was boiled with full nutrients intact. Some people misinterpret this as impure and clarify the juice to improve color while taking out the nutrients to make golden-yellow jaggery, which is nothing but refined sugar. Due to this grading scale, colored adulterants, which may be toxic, are sometimes added to jaggery to simulate the golden hue. Natural dark brown jaggery is derived from whole sugarcane juice, by means of boiling at nearly 200°C in a large cast iron pan. Food-grade mustard or castor oil (having a high smoke point) is usually used in such pans in negligible quantity (approximately 2 teaspoons per 100kg) so that the very hot juice froth does not come out of pan during boiling. Mustard or castor oil is present in whole jaggery in traces, and the qualities of such oils (laxative) coincide and support this quality of whole jaggery. Many manufacturers use synthetic oil and argue that since it is in trace amounts there is no health concern. However, synthetic oil even in traces can be toxic. So, one not only needs to verify the wholesomeness of jaggery (attained with no clarification), but also verify the type of oil used, even in traces. Their ancestors were Rajput warrior clans who later accepted Islam after the Muslim influence in the Indian Region and moved from Rajasthan (India) to Kashmir and Pakistan. Pakhral Rajputs are known to be warriors, hospitable and aggressive people. Pakhrals reside mainly in Pothohar Plateau including Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Upper Salt Range region, while some tribes are in Azad Kashmir, Indian-administered Kashmir, Punjab, Hazara and Dera Ismail Khan. Potohar area is famous as Pakhral Rajputs area. Raja is mostly used as a title in Pakhral Rajputs which is derived from the word Rajput. Many Pakhral Rajputs were included in the so called khana number 10 during the British rule in India. Since partition Pakhrals have been involved in different enterprises, while many adopted government careers, law, politics, anthropology, education etc. and a good chunk are in foreign countries. When Kashmir was sold to Gulab Singh the descendants of raja Jambu Lochan moved to Azad Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Potohar, and other areas. It is said that they were in fact four brothers who moved from Kashmir to these areas (today these areas are Rawalpindi (Naizian, Sagri, Pagh, Sahang, Mastala, Adhi, Chak rajgan, Natha Chatar, Daultala, Nata, Dhokabdal, Mora Nori (karsal - doke rajganetc.) Jehlum, Chakwal (Dhoda, Jandala Pakhral, Ghazial, Khokhar Rajgan and Saba Mohra), Azad Kashmir and some parts of Khyber Pakhtoon Khawa). Some sons of these four brothers also moved to the modern day places Gujar Khan. This is a strong tradition that exists among the most distinguished of Rajputs of all faiths, the registration of surnames and the length of the family tree. Prominent Muslim Rajputs remain and continue to record their family trees from their Hindus beyond even after their conversion to Islam, right up to the present day. Rajput inheritance applicants more than likely will have no ancestral records of family lineage. Like other Rajputs People the Pakhral Tribe also attach great importance to their Family Tree. The Pakhrals founded and settled many famous villages of Pothohar. Raja Bajdev (Allah Khan) had four sons. Raja Qamar alias Kaur Khan or Kol Khan, Raja Daulat Khan alias Dhol Khan, Raja Jasamat alias Jassi Khan, Raja Bisat Khan alias Basi Khan. Of these, Raja Kol Khan settled Kontrila, Raja Dhol Khan settled Dhalla, Raja Jassi Khan settled Sihala and Basi Khan settled Bikhral. Raja Pakhardev's sixth son was Raja Mayar Bahkreo alias Bahkreo who settled Kallar Kahar. Raja Beli Khan settled Chak Beli Khan, Raja Daulat Khan alias Dolu settled Daulatala, Raja Elahi Bakhsh alias Jabo Khan settled Chak Jabo, Raja Thakkar Khan settled Debi Pakhardal (Devi) and Raja Mast Khan settled Mastala and Raja Himmat Khan settled Sohawa and Ladi Malana near Khadkan. Among the descendants of Raja Kaur Khan was Ratti Khan, who established the village of Ratial near Ayaz Sartalab, six miles from Kontarila. Raja Kaur Khan was the seventh descendant of Raja Sagar Khan, who founded the famous town of Sagri. The real name of the founder of Sagri, Raja Sagar Khan Pakhral, was Sikandar Khan and he was a descendant of Raja Pakhar Khan. Raja Sagar Khan's father's name was Sardar Zaman Khan and he was born in 1528 in the village of Kontarila. Some books say that Raja Sagar Khan participated in the war against Ibrahim Shah on behalf of Sikandar Shah Suri. Sikandar Shah Suri won the war and granted him the area from present-day Dharanijar i.e. Sihala to Mohra Bani Shah as a fiefdom. Raja Sagar declared Sagri-Mohra Venice as the center of his capital. Raja Sagar Khan's fiefdom remained intact even during the Mughal era, while in 1578, the Mughal governor of Punjab, Khan Jahan Khan, stayed with Raja Sagar Khan while going to Kashmir. It is also said that Raja Sagar Khan also managed the Rabat or Rawat Sarai (Fort). One night in 1597 AD, Kashmiri travelers staying in Sarai Rawat were massacred. Hearing the screams, Raja Sagar Khan reached Rawat with his soldiers and fought against the robbers. It is said that Sardar Sagar fought with great courage and bravery and saved all the travelers but was himself injured. Sardar Sagar Khan, unable to bear his wounds by morning, was martyred. It is a small, white marble structure built by Mughal emperor Jahangir and modified by the architects of Shah Jahan, and is among his prominent extensions (such as Sheesh Mahal and Naulakha pavilion) to the Lahore Fort Complex. The mosque is located on the western side of Lahore Fort, closer to Alamgiri Gate, the main entrance. Moti in Urdu language means pearl, which designates a perceived preciousness to the religious structure. It was an established practice among Mughal emperors to name the mosques after generic names for gemstones. Other such examples are the Mina Masjid (Gem Mosque) and Nagina Masjid (Jewel Mosque), both located in Agra Fort and completed in 1637 under Shah Jahan's reign. The mosque, built between 1630 and 1635, is the first among the "pearl" named mosques, the others built by Shah Jahan in Agra Fort (1647–53), and his son Aurangzeb in the Red Fort (1659–60). After the Mughal Empire, the mosque was converted into a Sikh temple and renamed Moti Mandir during the period of the Sikh rule under Ranjit Singh's Sikh Confederacy (1760–99). Later, Ranjit Singh also used the building for the state treasury. After the demise of Sikh Empire, when the British took over Punjab in 1849, they discovered precious stones wrapped in bits of rags and placed in velvet purses scattered inside the mosque, along with other inventory. The building was later revived to its former status, and the religious relics were conserved at the nearby Badshahi Mosque. The structure, located in the northwestern corner of Dewan-e-Aam quadrangle, is typical of Mughal architecture of Shah Jahan's times. It is completely built of white marble that was brought from Makrana. The façade is composed of cusped arches and engaged baluster columns with smooth and fine contours. The mosque has three superimposed domes, two aisles of five bays, and a slightly raised central pishtaq, or portal with a rectangular frame. This five-arched façade distinguishes it from other mosques of the similar class with three-arched facades. The interior is simple and plain with the exception of ceilings that are decorated and designed in four different orders, two arcuate, and two trabeated. It is 17 km east of Rawalpindi on Grand Trunk Road. The 2nd century Mankiala stupa can be seen from the roof of the fort's mosque. The fort is located approximately 50 miles from the vast Rohtas Fort, which had been built by Sher Shah Suri to establish control of the Pothohar region. The fort is said to have founded as a caravanserai in the 15th century by the Delhi Sultanate. However, Pothohar was under control of Malik Jasrat during this period, and he was probably its original builder. Jasrat is known to have constructed a series of other forts in the region. The caravan itself may have been built atop a Ghaznavid-era fort that was established in 1036 CE. it came under control of The caravanserai was then later fortified in the 16th century by the Mughal emperor Humayun in order to defend the Pothohar plateau from Sher Shah Suri's forces. The fort was the scene of a battle between Sultan Sarang Khan gakhar and Islam Shah Suri in 1546. The fort is almost in square form and has two gates. There is also a quadrangular building with a dome in the fort's inner area – an area which also contains many graves. Along the perimeter are several small cells, which may have originally been small rooms rented out to itinerant merchants. The fort also contains a mosque with three domes. The temples are associated with the syncretic Udasi movement of Sikhism.0 The island is famous for Teerath Asthan which is the biggest Hindu temple in Pakistan. The complex has eight other temples, a library, dining areas, a huge garden, along with rooms and residences for monks and people who want to stay on the island on a spiritual retreat. The island was once a forested island and was called Menak Parbat. Later the Udasi saint (sage) Baba Bankhandi Maharaj settled here and then this place became known as the Sadhu Bhelo. The word Sadhu Bela means the woods of the sage. According to some sources, the Sadh Belo is named after an Arab commander named "Saeed" (سعید), who occupied and stationed on the island. Sadh Belo island is downstream from Bukkur island, and is separated from it by a short stretch of river. It is located on the River Indus flowing between Rohri and Sukkur. The temple complex is spread on two interconnected islands; Sadh Belo having kitchen, verandah, many temples, and Deen Belo which houses samadhis, a park, and Rishi Nol mandir. Baba Bankhandi Maharaj (born as Balchand Sharma), a 15-year-old spiritual seeker, whose origins were reportedly either from Kero Khetar near Delhi, or Nepal, arrived in Sindh in 1823, in the town of Sukkur, which was then a major trading hub for the Subcontinent. He settled in the forested island of Menak Parbat (which is Sadhu Bela's original name), alone, and became known as the sage of the woods. The island was just a clump of trees when Bankhandi first arrived there, but he liked the place so much that he chose it as a place to set up his dhuni (sacred fire). It is said that once Baba Bankhandi saw Annapurna, the goddess of grain, in a dream. She gave him an oblong metal object called Kamandal and told him that, as long as this object is in the complex, there won't be any shortage of grain for the community kitchen. Later, Baba Bankhandi established various places of worship, including temples, dedicated to Annapurna, Hanuman, Ganesh and Shiv Shankar, and places for Granth Sahib and Bhagavad Gita. Baba Bankhandi died at age 60. Baba Bankhandi had many disciples who succeeded him one by one as the mahant or custodian of the place; the most notable among them are Swami Achal Prasad, Swami Mohan Das, and Swami Harnarain Das Udasin. The temple was initially constructed in 1899 by the eighth gaddi nashin Sant Harnam Das. The place is held in high esteem by Hindus throughout Sindh and even in India, occasionally attracting pilgrims from across the border. The annual death anniversary of Baba Bankhandi Maharaj called the Baba Bankhandi Maharaj Mela attended by thousands and is celebrated by a three-day festival in which pilgrims are provided with free lodging, food, and water. One of the unique feature about Sadhu Belo is that many prayers and texts are written here in Sindhi, the language of the Sindh province in Pakistan. For non-Hindus, it's difficult due to the security system because Sadh Belo is the biggest temple in Pakistan. The ‘gaddi nasheen’ of the temple (the family that has been managing the temple complex for generations) moved to India after Partition in 1947. But members of the family still travel once a year to Pakistan to officially open and attend the fair, as symbolic keepers of the temple complex. Currently, Sadh Belo is under the custody of Evacuee Trust Property Board and is managed well, but the absence of the former administration of Udasi mahants is felt immensely. It was the last military conflict of Raja Dahir, in which the Umayyads defeated his army near the Indus River and resulted in the death of Dahir. The battle took place on the left bank of the Indus. The names of that place on those occasions were Jiwar, Bet, and Rawer. After besieging Debal, Muhammad ibn Qasim joined with 2,000 cavalry from Persia in addition to the rest of his forces making it 20,000 men, and marched towards Aror. He was opposed by Raja Dahir's forces. According to the Chach Nama, the strength of the forces was 20,000-25,000. According to modern historians such as K. S. Lal, the forces included not less than 50,000 men. Qasim, seeing the imbalance, took advantage of the ground. He waited for Dahir to attack after getting in a good position. During the battle, a fireball struck Dahir's elephant, and the elephant bore Dahir off the field. Even though Dahir fought, he was killed by an arrow in his neck and his army faced high casualties, resulting in an Umayyad victory. After the victory, Muhammed ibn Qasim found the body of Raja Dahir and sent it to Al-Hajjaj. He later dispatched his army to besiege the fort of Rewar. Since his son had retreated to Brahmanabad in war, the queen of Raja Dahir, Rani Bai committed jauhar to avoid being captured by the army of Mohammed Qasim. These Kitchens were constructed during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. It was where the food was prepared along with a huge variety of drinks, sweets and appetizers. When the Sikh came to power and took over the Lahore Fort, the Royal Kitchens were damaged like many other buildings inside the Fort. The kitchen was converted into a food store room and at the same time it was used as a stable for horses and other animals. The British in 1849 converted it into interrogation cells and jails. The building that we see today is the remaining part of the huge kitchen complex. Walled city of Lahore Authority was handed over the administrative control of the Lahore Fort by the Government of Punjab in 2014 and thus in 2015, after revealing this deadliest and dangerous zone, where no one wanted to go, the planning for preserving the area started. The excavation of the place was the main task during which several other structures were also revealed and even walls having fresco work on them were exposed. All these structures had somehow gone underground with the passage of time. The original ground levels of the place were revealed. Extensions and structures connecting to the temple of Loh were also found there with fresco work on them. Picture Wall Emperor Jahangir ordered the construction of the massive "Picture Wall", which is considered to be the greatest artistic triumph of the Lahore Fort. Unlike the Red Fort and Agra Fort, Lahore Fort's ramparts were made of brick rather than red stone. The monumental Picture Wall is a large section of the outer wall which is exquisitely decorated with a vibrant array of glazed tile, faience mosaics, and frescoes. The embellished wall stretches over much of the fort's northern and western walls and measures approximately 1,450 feet (440 m) by 50 feet (15 m). The wall contains 116 panels, which depict a myriad of subjects, including elephant fights, angels, and polo games that do not form a cohesive narrative; each can be viewed in isolation. Though begun under Jahangir, the Picture Wall was decorated throughout the 1620s, and may have been completed under the reign of his son, Shah Jahan. Alamgiri Gate Located at the western end of the fort, the Alamgiri Gate is the entrance of the Lahore Fort. It was built by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1674. It has two semi-circular bastions where lotus petal design adorns its base. It opens to the Hazuri Bagh and faces the Badshahi Mosque. The gate is one of Lahore's most iconic monuments, and once featured on Pakistani currency. The statue is 10.5 centimeters (4.1 in) tall, and depicts a nude young woman or girl with stylized ornaments, standing in a confident, naturalistic pose. Dancing Girl is highly regarded as a work of art. The statue was excavated by British archaeologist Ernest Mackay in the "HR area" of Mohenjo Daro in 1926. It is now in the National Museum, New Delhi, having been allocated to India at the Partition of India in 1947. Priest King (sculpture) The Priest-King, in Pakistan often King-Priest is a small male figure sculpted in steatite found during the excavation of the ruined Bronze Age city of Mohenjo Daro in Sindh, now Pakistan, in 1925–26. It is dated to around 2000–1900 BCE, in Mohenjo Daro's Late Period, and is "the most famous stone sculpture" of the Indus Valley civilization. It is now in the collection of the National Museum of Pakistan as NMP 50-852. It is widely admired, as "the sculptor combined naturalistic detail with stylized forms to create a powerful image that appears much bigger than it actually is," and excepting possibly the Pashupati Seal, "nothing has come to symbolize the Indus Civilization better." The sculpture shows a neatly bearded man with a fillet around his head, possibly all that is left of a once-elaborate hairstyle or headdress; his hair is combed back. He wears an armband, and a cloak with drilled trefoil, single circle and double circle motifs, which show traces of red. His eyes might have originally been inlaid. The sculpture is incomplete, broken off at the bottom, and possibly unfinished. Originally it was presumably larger and probably was a full-length seated or kneeling figure. As it is now, it is 17.5 centimeters (6.9 in) high. Though the name Priest-King is now generally used, it is highly speculative, and "without foundation". Ernest J. H. Mackay, the archaeologist leading the excavations at the site when the piece was found, thought it might represent a "priest". Sir John Marshall, head of the pre-Partition Archaeological Survey of India at the time, regarded it as possibly a "king-priest", but it appears to have been his successor, Sir Mortimer Wheeler, who was the first to use Priest-King. An alternative designation for this and a few other IVC male figure sculptures is that they "are commemorative figures of clan leaders or ancestral figures". A replica is normally displayed at the National Museum of Pakistan, while the original is kept secure. The director of the museum explained in 2015 "It's a national symbol. We can't take risks with it". The Urdu language title used by the museum (with the English "King-Priest") is not an exact translation, but حاکم اعلی (hakim aala), a well-known expression in Urdu-Persian-Arabic meaning a sovereign or bishop (who is entitled to sit in a chair of state on ceremonial occasions). The finds from Mohenjo Daro were first sent to the Lahore Museum, but later transferred to New Delhi, the new capital of British India, and the headquarters of the ASI, with a view to displaying them in the "Central Imperial Museum" that was planned. Eventually, after the partition of India in 1947, this was established as the National Museum of India. The new Pakistani heritage authorities requested the return of the IVC artefacts, as almost all of those found by the time of independence had come from sites, like Mohenjo Daro, that were now in Pakistan. The statue was only returned to Pakistan after the 1972 Simla Agreement between Pakistan and India, represented by their heads of government, respectively Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the President of Pakistan, and Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India. According to a Pakistani archaeologist, Gandhi refused to return both the Priest-King and the other most iconic Indus sculpture, the Dancing Girl, a smaller bronze sculpture also found at Mohenjo Daro, and told Bhutto he could only choose one of them. It is believed to be house of Momal, daughter of Raja Nand Gujjar of Kak State who constructed a palace for her on the mound. This palace was built around 590 AD during the reign of Rai Sahasi II. in Rai dynasty of Sindh. Some historians relate it to the love tale of Momal Rano of the Soomra dynasty of Sindh. As per story king of Amarkot, Hameer Soomoro, along with his ministers, Rano Mahendhra, Seenharro Dhamachanni and Daunro Bhatyanni, used to go for hunting in far flung areas. Once during a hunting spree, they were encountered by a person who came across them accidentally. He was a prince from the area near Kashmir, who had heard the legend of Momal's beauty & charm and got so inspired that he pursued the adventure, but when he approached the area where Momal lived, he was not only overpowered by her enchanting beauty but also the tricks & schemes played by her female servants/sisters. The story told by this prince was sufficient to intrigue those four friends. They extracted information from the prince about Momal's whereabouts and decided to pursue the same adventure. Momal lived near Lodhruva, in the north-east of Umerkot. She lived with her seven (some historians say nine) sisters, the most famous of which being Somal and Natir in a palace called Kak Mahal. It was a magical palace with labyrinths, puzzles, fake ponds, illusions and much more. It was a legend that anyone who wanted to be a suitor for Momal would undergo several obstacles, and the one who succeeded in reaching the palace unharmed would possibly be accepted as her consort. Momal enjoyed legendary beauty. Somal was famous for intelligence; while Natir was known as a schemer. They worked collectively to enchant the suitors and overpower them. They could not let the suitors experience an easy task of puzzles they designed for them. As the luck would have it, Rano Mendhro, who was famously intelligent and brave, was the only person to successfully reach the palace, utterly unharmed. Momal was fairly impressed and that led him to be accepted as her consort. Rano and Momal kept meeting each other for long and their love story gained profundity of feelings from both sides. However, King Hameer felt jealous about Rano to have succeeded in overpowering the most beautiful woman in the world he personally knew. So he kept a check on Rano and asked him not to meet Momal. Rano being his minister had to abide by the orders of his King friend. But his passion about Momal did not let him stay peacefully away from her. So usually he left for Ludhruva on his camel in the evening after work and returned to Umerkot by the next morning. Whenever he did that, which he did pretty often, he tried to stealthily go and meet Momal, it was pretty long distance though. Somehow he was caught one day and the king imprisoned him. But for the old friendship sake the king released him with conditions not to meet Momal again. But this had not to happen. He continued the same pursuit. Once Rano was unable to reach Kak, so Momal, out of passion, asked Somal to wear clothes like the ones Rano used to wear and slept by her side. The moment Rano arrived, he mistook Somal as Momal's lover and, in utter disgust, left the palace leaving behind his cane. As Momal woke up, she saw his cane and realized Rano had been to her room and seen her with Somal, rather mistaken Somal to be some man. Momal waited for his return but to no avail. At last she resorted to go out for Rano. Disguised as a man, she finally searched him and stayed in Umerkot for some time. Rano came to learn it was Momal so he tried to go away from her. She pleaded him to forgive for her mistake, which was basically not an intentional trick but an outburst of passionate feelings about Rano. He refused to forgive her. Out of desperation, she jumped in raging fire. When Rano came to learn this, he followed her in the same flames. The story is a combination of both fact and fiction. The names of places related to the tale are real, both within the boundaries of the province of Sindh and Rajasthan. However, the ideas of magic, Kak, concerns as to how Rano was able to travel so fast from Umerkot to Lodhruva almost every day etc. make it a legend. Sukkur exudes a remarkably rich and diverse history; one can explore Sufi shrines, Hindu temples and famous mosques all the way from Sadhu Bela, Masoom Shah Jo Minar and Tomb of Seven Sisters etc. All of these are historic places with myths and romance surrounding their valor and glory. There are almost 600-700 worship temples located all across Sindh. While moving out from Sukkur, almost 23 kilometers away from Sadhu Bela Temple, exists the ‘Asthan of Kalka Devi’. It is also called Kalka Devi Temple, Kalka Devi Cave Temple or Kalka Devi Mandir and this is one of the holiest Hindu temples in Pakistan. Aror Rock is an amazing shaped rock; as the tale goes, when Mohammad Bin Qasim came to conquer Sindh in AD 711, Aror was the residence of King Dahir. Presently, there are ruins of the Bin Qasim Mosque built by Muhammad Bin Qasim himself in that era. A mile away from this Masjid in Rohri hills, there is a historic temple which contains a mountainous cave called the Kalka Devi temple; one can see Kalka Devi’s sculptures, oil lamps and can smell its incenses inside it. This temple is tagged with the Hindu Goddess Kali. Kalka means power in Shashthi language. Historians are of the view that Kalka was a religious woman who used to live in the cave and the hills during the Roe Dynasty. The majority of Hindu devotees pay homage to Kalka Devi on the night of the first Monday of every month. However, during the nine-day Hindu festival, in spring and autumn, devotees gather and sing various hymns and songs praising the Goddess Durga in a large organized fair. The cave is low roof, ash grey caved walls and strong, sweet smell of burnt incense (agar bati) provides the perfect atmosphere to sit, pray and reflect. There is a room on the other side of the cave that leads to the main hall where food is served three times a day. According to the other legend, Goddess Kalka Devi appeared on this place on her way to the Hinglaj Mata temple. According to the caretaker of the temple, there are two tunnels in the Kalka Cave temple which connect to the Hinglaj Mata temple. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kali. The word Kalka means power in Shashthi language. Many rooms have been built around the original temple in the cave, some for prayers and others for accommodating visitors who flock in thousands at the time of Hindu festivals. From one of the rooms a five to six feet high entrance leads to the cave. The smell and the smoke of agar batis (incense), creates a mystical aura around the area. Moving further into the temple, I had a chance to mingle with a few people involved in discussions over it. Syed Nizamuddin Mir Muhammad Masoom Shah, also known as Mir Muhammad Masoom Shah Bakhri, was a sixteenth-century Muslim historian, physician, and pharmacist from Bakhar, Sindh. He served as governor under Mughal Emperor Akbar, who named him Nawab of Sukkur. Masoom Shah began construction on the minaret in 1594, and his son Mir Buzurg finally completed it in about 14 years. It is made of red brick and limestone, has a conical shape, is slightly off the perpendicular, and is crowned by a dome to which an internal stone staircase gives access. The Masoom Shah Minar is a beautiful piece of architecture. One of its distinguishing features is the measurement data gathered during its construction; for example, the minaret’s length is 84 feet, its circumference is 84 feet, and there are 84 steps to the top. It is surmounted by a small dome, and while there are four floors within the minaret, there are windows for people to stop at, and those who climb to the top can see for miles. This minaret is thought to have served as a watch tower, and the Rohri Lansdowne Bridge could be seen from the top of the structure. Today, iron bars can be seen on the top of this tower, which were not part of the original design but were later installed during the British era after some people attempted suicide by jumping from it. Aaram Gah, which translates to “resting place,” is a room on the left side of the platform before entering the Masoom Shah Minar. The blue tiles used in Persian style architecture can also be seen in the construction of this building, which adds to its splendor. Despite the fact that this structure was built in 16th century, its beauty has not faded. This structure was built with red but thinner bricks than normal bricks. The courtyard around the minaret serves as a cemetery for Mir Mausum Shah and his family members. There is also a canopy built near the tower, with various Persian words written on its roof, pillars, and graves, as well as traditional carvings. There are graves of people from the Masoomi and Mousavi families wherever there is space within the minaret’s boundaries. The Auqaf Department, which operates under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, is in charge of the minar’s maintenance and preservation. Moreover, because of the dense population surrounding the Masoom Shah Minar and the houses being uncovered, visitors to the minaret are not permitted to bring cameras. The upper part of the Masoom Shah Minar has also been repaired several times because, as a historical building, the need for renovation and repair was felt over time. This monumental minaret reflects Mir Masoom Shah’s passion, and it is believed that the Nawab of Sukkur constructed it on a hillock so that it could be seen not only from all areas of the city, but also the entire city could be seen from its top.
